I've acquired a rem. 700 pss 308. Thinking about cutting the barrel back to 16" and running a suppressor. The shorter barrel would be for portability with a can. Wondering how much this will affect accuracy and the max. Effective range. Thanks for your time. Phillip

    Re: 16" PSS 308??

It shouldn't affect accuracy but I think it will affect maximun range. I've never thought cutting a 1:12" twist rifle down to 16" was a good idea simply because of the long twist rate but I'm sure others have had more experience...

    The PSS is 1:12"... Right?

    Re: 16" PSS 308??

It seems a shame to cut down the barrel on a suppressed supersonic rifle only to lengthen it again with a long suppressor. You might consider trying to get a reflex suppressor which is just as effective but a lot shorter:

This site is Canadian. I'm not sure if there's a US distributor.

If you want a quiet subsonic rifle you'd be much better off with the 300 Whisper cartridge.

What I was thinking about doing was making a compact bolt gun that will be easier to carry on a tractor, jeep, ranger, etc. With a can to preserve what's left of my hearing. Just wondering if anyone here shoots a 16" bolt 308, and if it's accurate out to 500 yards or so.
    Thanks

On the contrary it is fine. We have a Rem 700 PSS here at the shop that is chopped to 16" and running a supressor. It shoots just fine and Nathan has made hits out past believable distance with the 16" barrel....

The guys at POF were hitting to 800 yards with their 12" .308 rifle but you have to know that you will use more elevation due to loss of velocity with the shorter barrel especially with a factory barrel.

    Re: 16" PSS 308??

It's doable, in addition to needing more elevation your wind calls will have to be pretty accurate as the wind will have more affect on your slower moving round. I am shooting an 18 inch 308 out to 800 no problem, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do that with a 16 inch.

    Re: 16" PSS 308??

T/C Encore pistols do it all the time..
but add the .308 case length to your so you have a full 16" of rifleing.
    i have a 18.5" sps-v in .223, alot of fun!
back in the 80's i had a t/c contender in 223 with a 14" barrel, cut it down to 10". was a flame througher but still hit anything i wanted.

I never said it would not work or that it was not accurate. I said it was not good for the suppressor (propellant gas erodes the baffles).

    Re: 16" PSS 308??

I'm running a 16.5 inch .308 w/ 175 grn SMK's at or near 2450-2475 fps. It is plenty accurate for sub-moa groups out to 600 yards. With the shorter barrel I am giving up velocity and it is a little more finincky in the wind..but the ease of movement with it is a great trade off for what my purposes are.

    V-Taper,
When Nathan talked to the Manf of his can, he specifically asked if that can would have any harm done to it if he were to shoot a 30-378 that was 16" out of it. The Manf said no....there is no ill effect to the can.

    Mine was 1 in 12

    Re: 16" PSS 308??

I've run my 18" PSS with a can to 800 yds with no issues. You'll lose a little velocity with the shorty but the can should give you a 20 to 30 fps boost in velocity. If the accuracy is affected it will likely ube better than the longer barrel.

I also shoot 180's (subsonics) with the 1:12 twist. It will stabilize fine. Haven't gone heavier though.
