So i was just checking out a few ballistic tables of the 300, and it showed the 165 gr. nosler had the greatest energy, velocity, and less drop at 500 yards then any of the other bullets on the list. Seems like everyone shoots the 180. Does it by any chance perform better after 500 then the 165? or just seem more accurate? just thought that was interesting.

If I recall correctly, of the Nosler .30 cal Ballistic Tip bullets I've looked at for hunting, the 165's had the highest BC. I use 150's in my 30-06 because they shoot and perform so well on deer, I've never been motivated to try the 165's.

I had a friend who passed away some years ago that could shot the piss out of a 165gn NBT.his rifel was a remington sendero in a 300wm.the last time I got to see him shoot it was a great day for me.he shot it at 100 with 2 in the same hole.then he went out to 300 and put 3 more in the same hole about 6" lower than the bulls eye.

his load was 73.0gn's of IMR4381,fed 215m primers, and useing fed brass.have no clue to what the OAL was.but will add that he took nothing but head shoots with this one load all the way out to 300 yards.and always came home with meat to put in the freezer.

I'm a big believer in heavy bullets for a couple reasons. First, lightweight bullets exiting at high speed tend to disintegrate at short ranges. Second, with today's high BC heavies, you don't give up *that* much velocity downrange and as a result you gain a ton of downrange energy.

You might consider 200 Accubonds if you want a pure hunting bullet or the Berger 210 VLD's have performed very well on game as well.

Well thats what i was thinking about the heavier bullets too, but i was looking as to what i'd reload when i get my .300 wm and to me, energy would be energy...and based on that theory, the 180 gr hp and the 165 gr nosler both had the best velocity, most energy, and the less drop at 500. I'd be interested to see that data for 500 to 1000 yrds. Plus, the 165s would kick just a bit less....i would assume. Thats why i was posing the question here, because i know alot of you like the .300 wm

This is the table i'm referring too. The 190 and 200 do have alot of energy, BUT they drop a bit more. I was just curious if this was a case similar to the .270 and the 130gr. which carries more energy down range than the 150. but, looks like the 190 and 200 still have the energy, but i like the 165 with the flatter trajectory and should keep the energy to kill most game. the 180 hp seems nice too. just food for thought.

If you look at just energy, the 200, 180 and 190 loads have the most at 500 yds. And remember, trajectory is only ONE component. Heavier bullets have higher BC's which mean that even though they may drop MORE than a lighter bullet, they get tossed by the wind LESS. That makes your job easier and the chances of LR hits much higher.

Right now, in my mind, the best factory loaded hunting round would be the Federal Fusion 180. Very accurate, excellent on-game performance and inexpensive.

If you hand load, like I said, go to a 200 gr AB or 210 Berger or 208 Amax. If you have a 26" barrel, you can get nearly 3000 fps with those. Plug those numbers into JBM ballistic software against some 165's and see what you think then.

ah, makes sense! thats a ton of velocity for a big bullet. Also, makes sense to just get a .308 for under 180. less recoil and roughly same performance. I really like the 180s ballistics. seems like a very good compromise, and probably could kill just about anything out to 600 yards with it. as far as accuracy, are the bigger bullets any more accurate past say 600 yards? not necessarily wind bucking ability, but just accuracy. Seems like those best of the west guys shoot the 180 berger if i'm not mistaken. Like them or hate them, sure seems like a good round.

I haven't done any side-by-side accuracy testing. But I shoot the 208's and I have shot an elk kill-zone sized group (less that 12") at 1500 yds. for 5 shots. 1000 yds would be like shooting fish in a bucket. My rifle with the 208's and 210's is extremely effective in hunting situations (first round, cold bore) and routinely shoots sub-moa as far as I can see stuff. If I was shooting BR, I'd care more. I shoot steel and rocks, so as long as they're hitting what I shoot at, I'm happy.

Remember, your biggest variables in hunting at long distance is changing atmospherics and temperature. I wonder how many animals those BOTW guys have had run off. They probably don't show you those. Read this thread to see what I mean.
