167gr Lapua Scenars

I've been using the 155gr silver scenars with great results and I've read alot on here about them. Everyone seems to really like them. I haven't read much about the 167gr scenar though. I'm wondering if they'd perform better in a 10 twist Savage 10FP? Anyone have any experience with them?

167grs Scenar always gave awesome accuracy for me. Best group 0,3MOA
However, I wouldnt use them if you're planning to shoot further than 600m. I switched to the 155 Scenars eventually.

Well, since the 167 Scenar has a lower BC than the 155, it does not perform as well at extended range...that is the main reason why it is not a popular choice.

So there would be a disadvantage at long range to switching over to the 167 if the 155 Scenar is already working for you. If you are only shooting to 600 yards or so, 168gr loads like Fed GMM are accurate in most rifles.

A 10 twist is not a disadvantage to working up an accurate load for the 155 weight bullets...they will shoot fine out of that twist, but the 155 Scenar can sometimes take a little more experimentation to find the right load and OAL.

If your rifle just doesn't like them try the newer Sierra Palma 2156 or the 155.5 Berger, or any of the 175 gr.

Okay, I was using 155gr already but wanted to experiment with heavier bullet to improve against wind. Then why are you recommending me the 175gr?

Shardy, you will often hear a lot of people around here discouraging the .30 cals in the vacinity of 168gr as their performance is substandard when compared to 155's and 175's.

Dont ask me what the deal is as I cant provide you with an adequate explanation to why.

The 175's get high praise from many shooters. Try the Sierra 175 match kings if you get the chance.

Shardy, I was actually responding to KSPs questions.

A heavier bullet will not give better wind numbers unless the heavier bullet also has a higher BC...high enough to compensate for the lower velocity.

The 175 SMK has a better BC than the 155 Scenar. The two are not far apart, but the Scenar will still drift a few inches less because of higher velocity.

The 167 Scenar is not close to the other two. It will not fly as flat and will drift more. The difference between the two at long range will be measured in feet not inches.

The 155 Scenar and the similar high BC Berger and Sierra perform well in the 308. To achieve better wind performance you will need to move up to a 185-190 Berger or SMK, and drive them hard.

The reason that 168 SMK specifically are discouraged is because they were designed for 300 meter comp. The boat tail is at a diferent angle than say 175 smk gr to optimize preformance at 300 yds, sure you can run them out to around 700 yds maybe a little more, after that they loose stability, thats 168 smk other brands of 168 gr are a different story.

Remember I was speaking ( to Vman) about SMK 168, not Scenar 167 which will preform better than 168 smk but not as well as 155L INMO
