looking for suggestions for loading 168 and 175 bergers for the 308. I am thinking about trying 4895 with a slightly longer OAL of 2.830 wich is still magizine length and see how it does, if anyone has an experience with them and can offer any load data, I would love to hear what works for you

Re: 168 and 175 Bergers for the 308

I use 8208 in a two factory remington chambers loaded to 2.825" with 43.6 grains and the 168 vld. With varget I have found good nodes in the same area as smk's 168=45.5 and 175=44.5. Getting the correct jump if you cant reach the lands is the difference in a 1 moa + group and a group near 1/2 moa with the vld design.

Thanks...yeah I've heard the Bergers like to be jammed or just off the lands...unfortunately I don't think I will be able to get them where they need to be becuase of the magizine length but since I have them I will try. May have to go to the SMKs if I can't get them to shoot well.

Re: 168 and 175 Bergers for the 308

In my Remington chambers they would have to be 3.+" to touch the lands. When I first started loading them I started with max mag length and then set them about .015 deeper. I need to correct my above post. My oal is now around 2.810 I started around 2.825-2.830 the best group was putting 2 or 3 touching with two fliers. Seating deeper stopped the fliers and constricted my group size down to ~.6"

They have shot well in all my rifles once you play with the depth. My custom will allow seating into the lands and shoots incredibly tight there but like you have found that’s not always possible, Remington’s especially...

Re: 168 and 175 Bergers for the 308

Well I will start off with the an OAL of 2.830 and see how they fair if I can't get them to group with in the 1/2 inch mark I am going to go with a different bullet that is not as seating sensitive as the VLDs.

Its a GAP 308 so with handloads, I should/hope to be able and get the gun shooting 1/2 inch or better.

Re: 168 and 175 Bergers for the 308

I have used the 168 VLDs in WW brass with FED210M and 45.5 of Varget with great success out to 1150yds. These were loaded to feed from a BDL mag box.

Berger has a new 175gr 'Tactical' bullet out now. I know Midway and Graf's have them in stock. It's one of their new hybrid ogive bullets - designed for magazine-fed guns where you can't get into the lands. It gave sub-MOA groups at 1,000 yds in testing. HERE is a post about them from the Berger guy who developed them.

Sweet! Thank you I will definitely look into trying these.

They are a tangent ogive bullet that was designed by Bryan Litz to be stable through transonic stages of flight. They are a great bullet for any platform where OAL is an issue. I got some of these last year and shot them out of my 16" gas gun at 1000yds and they work as advertised. They shot great at a 1000 and everywhere in between. On top of that they were very easy to develop a load for since seating depth is not super critical.
