Range Report 168 or 175 in an LTR?

Re: 168 or 175 in an LTR?

Mine did much better with 168s out to 300yds against the 155s and 175s. Never tested beyond 300yds with my LTR. The factory loads that I tested were 168s in both BH and Fed and 175s in both BH and Fed. It held 168gr FGGM to ~3/4 MOA or so. Everything else was around 1 MOA.

Another thing with my LTR is that I had a hard time holding groups beyond 100yds. I have no idea why. I can shoot my other rifle very well at distance....not sure what was up with that particular rifle.

Hope I shed some light for ya.

Re: 168 or 175 in an LTR?

What I have noticed is that my factory 1:12 26" barrel shoots 168s better at 100 but 155 Scenars produce tighter groups at 200 or more. I have a box of 175 SMKs but I have not loaded them yet. I would bet that they will work better at longer ranges as well.

Federal 168 gr Gold Metal Match will work very well in your LTR out to 800 yards.

Agreed.

Re: 168 or 175 in an LTR?

I have found that the Hornady TAP 168 A-Max rounds shoot best from my rifle. My last trip to the range was .47 MOA at 200 yards. I've used Fed Gold Match 168s and 175s, as well as BH 175, all in BTHP to good success, but not as good as the Hornady 168 A-Max.

168gr Amax's shoot the best in my LTR (Factory tube).

I have tried 168mk, 168 Hornady Match, 175mk, 178 Amax's. I have been tempted to try 155 amax's but have so many 168gr Amax's I kinda lost interest in more load development.

Re: 168 or 175 in an LTR?

I shoot both factory HSM w/155 grain Sierra Palma's, and reloaded 155 grain A-Max's in Lapua brass, Varget and Fed210M primers, in my LTR.

Both work well and are accurate and fast for 20" of barrel.

Re: 168 or 175 in an LTR?

+1 on 168's out to 800Y.

I shot a lot of Hornady 168 match ammo. Worked great out to 800Y started to open up at 900y and just awful at 1000y. I thought the proplem over and had to come up with a 1000y ammo. I yhave reloaded but never built a load out to max. presure and I also wanted a hunting ammo all in one. So I went with the 178 amax over the 155GR amax so that I didn't have to push them as hard. I have found that the 178gr load below seems to work good from 100y out to 1000y.

Hornady match brass (I just use the lot# on the box/trim/debur flash hole/chamfer the case mouth VLD inside) no weighting of cases or checking in volume. I can't shoot good enought to tell the difference. I run BR2 cci primers and run 44.5gr RL-15 with the 178gr amax. At 2.800" oal at hundred yards I can put 10 rounds under a quarter. I have shot a .49moa 5 shot group at 300y with this load. Need to tweak the OAL so the jump is closer just havn't got around to it.

Re: 168 or 175 in an LTR?

Ive been shooting Federal preium gold medal match SMK 175gr out of my 20" SPS Tac .308 out to 800 yards in the field recently. No real range time for a while but if I miss a target it'll be the crazy up hill / valley cross winds not elevation.

Might look at going back to the 168gr though, big price difference here.
