Range Report 168 SMK vx 175 SMK

Quick question . . .

Is a .1 mil difference in vertical POI about right between a 168 and a 175 at 100 meters? (1 cm)

Depends on the rifle the powder the case and even the primer I shot 168s yesterday 5 smks and 5 bergers with same case and load of 4895 and there was a 4" difference at 100

Depends.... I would say maybe 1/2" lower but you got to shoot em to know.

FWIW, I have shot 168 and 175 Black Hills at 400 yards in a Savage 10BA and they shot exactly the same vertical, the 175 shot left.

In my rifle 168 and 175 fgmm shoot exactly the same at 100. At 200 I have to come up 2.5 moa with 175s compared to 2 moa on the 168s.

Everybody shoots different.

Using Ballistic Explorer to to see the two side by side using the manufacturer BC and if the zero was 100 meters for both loads and everything else relevant it will be about 1/8th moa at 200 meters. You will never see that because nobody is perfect and everybody and every rifle shoots different.

I would say shoot it and see as the POI may vary from rifle to rifle. I dope three different rounds for my 6.8 SPC and I have three rifles and four uppers. Each one is a little different.

You cannot predict POI variation at 100 yds based on calculated drop, what determines it (vertical and horizontal) is mostly barrel harmonics.

^this exactly, you cannot predict how the barrel is going to vibrate, including the transverse vector of the oscillation (the direction away from the barrel it will be pointing).

Wow! I'm amazed at the varying differences I'm seeing on these posts. I have never gotten more than about 1/2 in. between the two at 100. Usually, it takes outward of around 300 for real difference to show up, and more the further out you extend the range.
