Howdy guys, Im about to start reloading. Tomorrow im going to buy some bullets to reload. I cant decide if I would be happier with the 168gr amax or 178gr amax.......? It would be a all around round for my gun. Long and mid range hunting also long and mid range target. Anyone with experience with both?

Savagestag idk... but I guess I could hand feed them. Everyone I know thinks shooting 178gr is crazy. Yhey all shoot 168gr... which with shelf ammo I do also, but ima start reloading soon so ima go big. Everyone seems to be switching to the 178s.

The 208s should fit in your mag but I'm betting your savage is like some others I've loaded for, short chambered. If that's the case, you wouldn't get near enough powder in the case to make the 208 really fly. Check your chamber first....

Go 178 gr amax use hornady match or black hills match cases and load 45.2 gr of varget light it with cci br2 primers coal should be around 2.890 but you can play with that to suit your rifle. But if you gun does not shoot that well all the way to 1000 yards yours would the first that i have seen not shoot it well and i have used it in more 308's than i care to count. Down side is varget and cci br2 primers are on the hard to find list. Hope this helps

Either bullet will work well for short range around 600 yards or so but for a long range bullet, 800+, I would recommend the 178 AMAX. The Savage has a 10 twist barrel and will handle the 178s just fine. Your friends might not be too in depth into long range shooting to know the differences in a better long range bullet with a better BC. If you could find some 178 BTHP they would be worth a try as well as they have an excellent .530 BC.

Id say 178 amax. For mid to long range. 168 grain is dead unless dealing with factory ammo only. Usually the 155(155amax not that great bc wise) or 175 grain class bullets will have better ballistics. If you can push the 208 amax fast enough its a great round.

The 168 AMAX is a better 168 than the 168 SMK and shouldn't get lumped in with it. It will be better transonic and won't get squirrely like the SMK.

OP, in my opinion, don't waste your time on 168s. 178 A-Max can do everything you need. Why go with something that won't perform as well at long range?

My pet load in my Savage 24" .308 is: 178 gr A-Max, 42.2 grains IMR4064, CCI-200 primers, COAL of 2.780", 2640 fps average velocity at 60ºF.

I can shoot groups at 100, shoot long range out to 1000 or so, or even hunt with it if I wanted. It can do everything.
