Looking at a .17HMR and a .22LR. Going to be doing mostly 100 yd shooting with this rifle, occasionally up to 200 yds. Which is the better cartridge between the two, and why? I need answers other than the .22 is cheaper to shoot, .17hmr ammo might not be available in the future, etc.

The 17 HMR is ballistically superior than the .22 hands down. Short of a "tin-can" rifle, I would choose the 17 10 times out of 10.

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

I have an old Ruger 10/22 that has been sitting in my closet for years now. Thought about shooting it for a while before I buy a new rimfire. I'll be shooting mostly paper. Maybe a few critters now and then.

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

22LR is great for learning, 17HMR is great for killing.

At 100 yards, you need a very good 22 and great ammo to get the accuracy of a 17HMR at 100 yards. I have a $2,000 22LR that is as accurate as my $300 Marlin 17HMR at 100. I pay $10.50 a box for 22LR ammo (Eley Match) and $12.50 a box for 17 HMR (just whatever is cheapest, because it is all made to that same spec by CCI).

When it comes to terminal ballistics, the 17 HMR is scary, especially the hollow points, though they are less accurate than the ballistic tips.

All this said, I shoot my 22LR a lot more because when it comes to rimfire competitions, 17HMR is generally disqualified or marginalized.

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

For 100 and 200 yards, the .17 HMR is a killer. I love it. But like Carter was saying, there are a lot more local small bore competitions that I wish I could join, but are for .22 LR only. The power and flat trajectory of the .17 HMR make it fun as hell to shoot though.

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

We compete at 200 yards with the 17HMR and it's darned hard to beat it. Nothing that costs $227 will shoot with it. I shoot a lot of .22 LR as well so the best answer is to buy BOTH!

Sweet! You should compete with us. It's a lot of fun, and as far as I know I'm currently the only 17 that does.

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

17hmr ammo going away? Are you talking HMR or HM2???

The 17HMR has as much support as .22lr, whereas .17HM2 has pretty much NO industry support anymore(just when I discover it and find out what a great little paper punching round it is, go figure) and seems to be one of those things that no matter how good it is people will talk trash on even if they've never seen a round of it in person. Eley .17hm2 can be had for $5 a box- half the price for half the round of the 17hmr.

Depend on use. .22 for learning, .17HM2 for plinking, .17 for poking the eye out of something furry out to 150.

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

A few of the + with a 17hmr

1.No need to buy match ammo...Ballistic tip ammo is sold @ most sporting good stores

2.Shoots really flat

3. burns clean(I never clean my Annie)

4. Will take a squirrels head clean off @ 100 yards

The BAD

1. Most 17's only hold 4-5 rounds

2. If you hit a squirrel and its not a head shot..... Don't plan on eating it!

Here is my Annie.... I paid $550 for the gun NIB, $50 for the Brunton scope, and $30 for the rings! The gun is on the bottom and the shots were taken @ 100 yards w/a 3x9x40 scope. Off a bench with a bag in front(no bag in rear)

My Vote is for the 17HMR!

Gorgeous rifles. Yeah I'm not a hunter, but I had to try it out against a squirrel. Head shot from 75 yards. Body was in tact. Never found the head.

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

I don't eat eat squirrel, but if I was going to, I wouldn't shoot them in the body with 17gr's in the .17HMR. The 20gr's aren't quite as explosive on little critters

Re: .17 HMR and .22 LR once again...

I have had 2 .17 HMR's in the last 5 years, I'm a hard learner. I sold them both and I kept my 10/22, with fajen stock and Custom barrel and Kidd trigger group.
I guess it really depends what you are shooting at 200 yards.
I like to hunt ground squirrels in the Spring, and they are about the size of a Red Bull can. To make solid shots at long range with a .17 you better have Zero wind. Between the high price of ammo and the affects of wind, I just use my .223 loaded with 40 grn V-maxes. For my close work (out to 100yds) I use the trusty 10/22 shoting CCI's.
