+1

I have tested factory and custom barrels with breaking them in and not breaking them in. I can't tell that it makes any difference. Same with cleaning. I prefer to shoot than waste my time running a rod down a barrel that doesn't give me back any noticeable benefit. Just my opinion and what I plan to keep doing. You may see something different.

Re: 17 hmr break in?

Lija barrels has a break in procedure. You should check their web site. They told me to break in my barrels and that it does make a difference. I don't know but I figure it can't hurt any thing and so I do it.

Re: 17 hmr break in?

My marlin 917 likes it a little dirty. I cleaned it for no good reason at about 400 rounds and it took another 100 for groups to tighten back up. Until this the barrel had never been cleaned other than swabbing it when I opened the box.

As you may have noticed you will get lots of different advice on break in. Some people at AMU say no and some say you have too. With my .17 I did out of habit, the SF issued an order requiring a break in of our (then new) m-24s.

If you want the rest of the order let me know.

Re: 17 hmr break in?

Ugh... the phrase "break in" is almost taboo around these parts LOL.

I shot a few rounds out of my Savage 93r17 and cleaned it just to push anything out of the barrel the first 5rd mag broke loose and haven't looked back since.

Just don't clean the shit out of 17hmr. They like to be fired dirty as the fouling helps with accuracy.

I used to clean the shit out of my Savages and noticed my accuracy suffered until about 15-20 rounds went through it. What a bitch to zero the rifle when accuracy is poor until it dirties up.

Also try different makes of ammo, and if you find one that kicks ass, buy as many in that lot as you can, as they do very lot to lot. My Savages like Hornady red tips but the lot I recently got is meh at best.

I used to line 7.62 brass (either x39 or x54r, whatever was on the ground at the public range) and shoot them off one by one at 50 yards.

17HMR rocks though, so good choice in a great round!!!
