I was not comparing SMKs to VLDs. I was comparing standard Berger 175s to SMK 175s.

Victor i was not referring to what you said. I was letting them know that the new er bullet was easyer to work up a load for. Thats all. I was not trying to belittle what u said.

Gei, to throw another bullet or two in the mix don't forget the 178 AMAX and the new 178 BTHP from Hornady. The AMAX is very easy to get a load with same as the 175 SMK. It's my go to bullet for the .308. Very accurate and the cost is good.

The new 178 BTHP, with it's .530 BC, seems to look that way as well. I haven't gotten any loose bullets yet so I pulled the bullets from 5 178 Superformance rounds, dumped the powder and filled the case with 44grns of Varget. Reseated the bullets and tried them out at my next range session. I shot one to make sure it was on paper and then adjusted and shot 4 for a group. Did pretty well for basically no work up.

Not a problem. I did not take it in a bad way.

But Berger does make both standard ogive as well as the VLD design. I have not done a shadowgraph or machine comparison. But the standard Berger and the SMK of 175 grains are pretty close in general design. But the quality control is a world apart.

Nice Rob!

All i can comment on this topic is that the Berger has a slightly better G7 compared to the SMK... combine that with Bergers excellent QC and consistency and I would say you have a better projectile overall.

IF the cost is not a concern I would go with the Berger, but thats just me. The BC advantage of the Berger may not mean that much to you if your not a world class shooter at the end of the day.
