I got 2685 FPS out of my 18" PSS .308 today.

    Fed match brass
    CCI primer
    175 SMK
    43.5gr IMR 4895

.81 5 shot group. (This was an average of 3 5 shot groups.)

Shot a 44gr load and got high pressure signs. Flat primers, bolt hard to open, etc... Anybody else run this load over 600yds? JBM puts me at 36 MOA at 1000yds.

Because you will get a lot more out of it if you loose the Federal brass.

    Keith,

Your 2685 out of a 18inch barrel will keep you super sonic to 1000yds. How it will perform at 600 and beyond ??? you will have
to tell us when you shoot at those distances.
A friend of mine has a PSS he has set the barrel back, cut a match chamber and crown. Shoots great at 100/200 yds.
But dont shoot as well at 600 as his rifles with match grade barrels.

Nothing. It just shows pressure signs sooner than Lapua with the same load.

    YMMV

    Re: 175 SMK

My only issue is that I've got Fed match brass by the truck load. I would love to try Lapua brass but I don't have to spend any money on the Fed so I can buy more bullets!

Then you have what is known as a good thing! Excellent loads are made using Federal Brass!

    Yesterday I was running,
    44.9 grains of Varget
    175 SMKs
    BR2s
1X fired Win and Hornady brass
    2.815" COAL
92 degrees and humid as ...choose your jungle!

No adverse pressure signs with either lot of brass. Good accuracy to 565 yards but I ran out of elevation on my scope at 1000 and was limited to the top of my bottom stadia for sighting. Still made some hits out there but it was anticlimactic to say the least!

I already have replaced my flat base with a 20 MOA base and will resume my research soon. I was dismayed to learn, from a gassy "expert" at the range, that my 175 SMKs will not stay supersonic at 1000 yards...Unless I load them over at least 47 grains of Varget and run them through a 26" barrel, minimum...

Never mind that not a single hit was keyholed...Got to love those experts!

Given that there were no signs of excessive pressure, I'm going up to 45.5 grains of Varget next.

Exact same speed I'm getting with 44.8 of Varget in Winchester brass and 210M Primers. 24" 1/10 Savage. I've got some 4064 need to try it out and see if I get the same Accuracy.

    Re: 175 SMK

I load some 175s to try them out.

    Laupa brass
    Gm210Pr
    175smks
    44grs of Varget
    2.890 coal
    2645 fps

This was out of My 20" barrel. I also tried the RL-17 powder with the 175s
    Laupas brass
    52grs RL-17
    2.890 coal
    2710 fps

The brass was a little full with the RL-17. For the extra powder it took to push the bullet. I don't think it was worth switching to RL-17.

About 9 or 10 yrs ago, a lot of people were considering Federal one of the best. I believe this was because of the consistency. Not too long later, you stopped hearing much mention of it because it doesn't last for many firings.

The primer pockets tend to open up fairly easily - especially if you have higher pressures or leave your ammo in the sun.

If you got a good supply, use it. It is fine. When it's time to replace it, then worry about what to use.

    Re: 175 SMK

I am using mostly federal that I was keeping for the last while. I am on my 6-8 reload with it. Only had 4 or 5 that are garbage in that bunch. I was expecting to only get 2-3 reloads by the way people talk about them on the net.
