To celebrate the Holidays I thought I would post a most remarkable powder horn. From a fine old family in Peekskill, NY comes an absolutely original powder horn made and marked in the first year of the construction of West Point. This horn, depicting a duel, animals, birds and inscribed was made during the year prior to Washington's arrival to establish his headquarters, a location Washington considered the most strategic place in the new America. 1778 was the year Washington asked Thaddeus Kosciuszko, one of the heroes of Saratoga, to design and build the new fortifications at, what was then called, Fort West Point, a fort never captured during the revolutionary war.

Rare and wonderous, this horn was there during the first year of what was to become the oldest continuously occupied military post now within a newly formed nation, a nation called America.

Merry Chistmas, Happy Holidays and a safe New Year.
