Range Report 178gr Amax, How fast from a 20" barrel?

I've got my load up to 2500fps(43.2grs Varget) per Hornady's manual but looked at Hogden's 175gr SMK load and it has 45grs pushing it to 2650fps. I loaded some 178gr amax bullets with 45grs varget and am gonna test soon.

Was wondering if anyone else has went down this road? If so how fast could you get these to go(in a 20" barrel preferably)and what did you use?

You jumped from 43.2 up to 45 ? May wanna work up a lil slower lol.

Some RIFLES will take well over that, some less. Just find what Yours likes and is safe in it.

I run over 44 grains of Varget in a 18" tube with 2625 fps

I've been shooting 43.2grs and just loaded 15rds of 44grs and 5rds of 45grs. It matches the load data in the hogden manual and data i've run across here. 2500fps just seems slow, I need to hot rod this mofo as much as possible.

In my stock LTR (also a 20") 45g of Varget got me right at 2600 with a 175 smk. No signs of pressure but less than desireable accuracy.

In a factory chambered Rem 700 SPS- Tactical, I've had great success with 178 AMAXs (and 175 SMK) at 45 gr Varget in Lapua brass. Good 1k load. It was hot but not overpressure. MV was right at 2590.

However, after I got the barrel rechambered and trued - I found I had to back off to about 44.6 to get back to the same accuracy node and MV since I had a bit tighter chamber.

In my 20" gap I've run from 45 to 42 gr of Varget with a 178 Amax and lapua brass. I've settled on the 42gr, any more and I got pressure signs, and have shot hundreds of this load for years. Does 2530 to 2550 consistently depending on temps. I've taken this load out to 1000 several times with no problems if the wind isn't to bad.

Don't go any faster than Federal 175-gr GMM shoots out of THAT barrel.

A 20-inch can be expected to shoot about 100 fps slower than a 24-inch barrel, with in-spec loads.

Beware pressure signs voo-doo. Believe the bullet and the chrono. If you aren't using Hornady SuperFormance type powder, don't try to get SuperFormance velocities.

Out of my .308 ar 20" 5r barrel I am getting roughly 2560fps with the 178 amax, 43.6gr varget, lc lr brass and win wlr primers. Shoots very well out to 675 which is max for me.

FWIW, FGMM 175s run about 2575ish out of this barrel.

I've gotten slightly over 2600 with my TRG22 20", but my lower pressure loads are at 2571. Back pressure from a suppressor makes me load down just a little bit. I'm not going to ruin brass for an extra 25-35 FPS.

I'm loading 168gr AMAX currently with 45.0 grains of ADI AR2208 @ 2.810" with Federal match brass now and they're going well. Hoping to kick the wind a bit better with the 178's... Thanks lads.

I'm using rl15 and the 178 Amax getting 2586 today and 2640 in a little higher temp, aac-sd rem 700, 20"

2560 if memory serves me out of my 20" R700 with win brass and 44gr of RL15

2580 using 43.5 gr. of Varget, Fed. 210M and Win. case kicking the 178 AMAX out of a 22" factory barrel.
