Any reason to go with one over the other? I am getting ready to order 500 or so, and the AMAX does seem a bit cheaper. Does one seem to be more accurate than the other for out to 1000 yards?

You'll most likely get good results with either assuming you have at least a 11.27 twist rate.
Availability is something to consider

I should have a fast enough twist to stabilize the AMAX, as both my 5R and AR10 have 1/11.25" twist barrels. Of course, I doubt I'll use the bullet in my AR10, mainly in the 5R.

Obviously from my sig line I like the 178 AMAX and after using it for years after using the 175s for a long time I have really found the 178 AMAX to be every bit as accurate and give less vertical dispersion at distance due to the polymer tip. The BC doesn't vary as much due to tip deformation. No meplat trimming for the AMAX. I have shot them to 1300 yards in my .308 and they have been very accurate for me. They also usually save you a few dollars which is always a good thing too.

I perfer the Noslers over the other two. The Sierra's are just over priced. The amax was giving me seating depth issues as the little plastic tip was causing me to seat deeper to fit to mag length. The noslers shoot like a dream for cheap.

the 175gn smk works good out of my 5R.and useing 44gn of varet to push them.but I guess its what you really want to use it for.most are useing the A-max for hunt'n loads.and getting great results.but for me the smk is all I need to use.for papper shooting anyway.the 165gn NBT is what I hunt with.but hey go with your gut.

I shot the SMKs for a long time with great results from a .308 and .300wm. When the AMAX came out, I wasn't a huge fan of Hornady (for no particular reason) I just always had great luck with Sierra and stuck with them for my reloading. However, a buddy of mine gave me 100 AMAX to try and I found that they work every bit as well as do the SMKs. All in all, unless one shoots better out of your gun (which is possible) I'd go with the Hornady as they are less expensive and produce near identical results.
