17hmr to 22LR

parent case for a 17hmr is .22magnum....not .22lr.

rim thickness and rim diameter are different......i dont know the specifics of the Tikka....but i would be surprised if it was the same bolt.

Sako Quad is a 17hmr, 22mag, 17m2, 22lr switch barrel all with the same bolt and different barrels.

I don't know the answer to the original question but I am curious as well.

same bolt due to the same rimmed case being used across calibers. only the case length and neck seem to be different.

But, it’s not the same case or the same rim. Note that the lr uses a “heeled” bullet, where the outer diameter of the bullet is the same as the outer diameter of the case. Not as well that the 22 mag does not use a heeled bullet, and that the bullet seats fully within the inner diameter of the case. Additionally, the rim diameters are as follows; 0.294” diameter for the mag case, and 0.272” for the long rifle case...

Didn’t Remington have a recall on one of the 17hmr semi auto rifles for OOB issues? It was my understanding they just rebarreled to 22 mag, but could be mistaken.

Have multiple CZ455s and am able to switch between HMR and .22 lr by swapping out barrels, magazines, and magwell spacers.
If Tikka uses the same length bolt throughout their rimfire range, then the only concern would be whether or not the different caliber's magazine is compatible with a particular magwell.

But it sounds like a pain in the ass to pull the OE barrel:

To the OP, yes, you can. It's actually the route to go, if you intend to play with monolithic solids in .22LR. The .22Mag length magazine and bolt throw will make it (theoretically) easier to feed, and function.

@Geno C. would be the one to ask about that though...

With the longer bullets like mine, you won’t be able to fit in a 22lr mag so you will need a wmr/hmr mag if you don’t want to single feed.
