I just found a place to set up a steel target at 1800 yds. I shoot 190 bergers out of my 300wm at 2850. My ballistics chart says that my velocity will be 960 at the target. Is there any chance at hitting a 24x24 consistantly? I have previously shot the same rifle out to 1100 yds with no problem shooting 1 moa groups.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

You'll never know until you try.

1800 is a long ways. You would probably help your effort by loading the 230gr Berger, or 225gr Hornady.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

Try 215 Berger Hybrids too... According to JBM I have them running supersonic out to 1750 at sea level out of a 26" Krieger tube.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

I have had the 225 Hornady's out to 1950yd several times at 1800'asl with my 300wm @ 2860fps . 208 a max too @ 2950.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

By reading the posts I think I will order some of the amaxes and the heavier bergers if I dont have any luck with my current load.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

You'll find that the wind is your biggest limiting factor once you find a bullet that will stay supersonic at that distance. Some bullets do better then others. I've had good luck with the 208-gr Amax, and my buddy is shooting the new Berger 230-gr Tacticals consistantly at a mile.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

The bullet doesn't need to be ss to be accurate. Some bullets transition through ss well, & others don't. I know the 208 a max, & 225 hpbt do as I have had both out to 2000yd several times, & they were only ss to about 1500-1600+/-.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

I was really looking at just going 338LM, but maybe with the new heavier .30 cal offerings from Hornady and Berger I'll have to change my mind.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

1800yrd is more then doable with the .300wm and +200gr pills. Just this last week I went 19 for 20 at a mile with 190gr SMK's (mk248 mod 0) on a 55 gal drum. I've also had reasonable luck out to over 2000m in the past. So I'd say as long as you do your part no problems.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

I have a couple of places where an 1800 yard shot is possible. Only thing is it would be straight down the middle of a major highway.

Oh well, I live vicariously through you guys.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

That caliber is more than capable. Just have to have the right load, rifle, optic, and chi. I wish I still had places to shoot that far.

probably not. Check your ES/SD, see how that will effect your ballisitics. Then look at your probable BC variations. Combine your BC variations with your ES/SD and you'll get an idea of how big your group is likely to be.

Then accept your inability to properly dope the wind across a mile, for multiple shots. ( hey if you get a low wind day , great but , across 1 mile i doubt it.)

wind dope error + BC/ES/SD error = did you see where it went ?

i guess the real question is what do you mean by consistently ?

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

I'd go with Mallard's assessment. Also we have tried quite a bit 300WM and 338LM to 1800 yard +/- and it's quite difficult even with little wind, just due to ES/SD and any rifle quirks.

And cold bore shots even more difficult.

Re: 1800yd with 300wm

I do believe it will get out there without a problem... maybe more consistent than a .308 for sure..
I've tried shooting out that far with my .308.
2 out of 14 shots made were pretty darn close to hitting the 18"x12" steel target.
My mistake was placing the target right in front of the sunrise blinding me while I spent 3 to 10 minutes looking for the target.... so that killed it for me.
The picture was taken about 6 in the morning... that little black spot on the top of the horizon there is my buddy's ride at 1800 yards. I wasn't completely awake obviously having to place the target right in front of the sunrise, lol...
