Gents,

Can anybody recommend a starting and max loads for the 190grn VLD Berger and RL17 for use in a .308win?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Peter

Re: 190 grn Berger and RL-17???

I would start at 46gn and work up to 48gn.useing the 208/210 bullets 48gn is a compressed load.and the book says that 48.7gn is a compressed load for a 180gn bullet.

but I would just move up to the 208/210 bullets if it was me.they are doing a really good job for those who have tested and use them.even shoot some today to make sure the load was going to work for me.now all I have to do is load up some more.

but hey this is just me old opinion.just hope that I was able to help.

Re: 190 grn Berger and RL-17???

Thanks for that...

I may well go upto the the 210 AMAX, but I have a box of 190grn Bergers so I thought I'd give them a go...

I'm hoping that they will function through the magazine better without eating into the case capacity of my Lapua brass which has been a problem with certain other loads I've tried.

Re: 190 grn Berger and RL-17???

FWIW, I loaded up some 200gr Sierra Gameking BTSP over RL17. Kept them loaded to mag length. Here's what I got,

Factory Rem 700 VS chamber/throat
20.5" bbl
200gr Sierra Game King BTSP
Win Brass
CCI 200 primer
2.81" OAL
RL-17
50.0 gr – 2620 fps
51.0 gr - 2670 fps
51.5 gr – 2700 fps
52.0 gr – 2730 fps

Re: 190 grn Berger and RL-17???

Hi Shane,

Tanks for that. I've just loaded some "pressure testers" between 48grns and 52grns and will give them a try tomorrow if the weather co-operates.

With regards the loads mentioned above, what sort of accuracy were you getting at the various powder weights?

Regards,

Peter

Re: 190 grn Berger and RL-17???

Pete, I just ran most of them over the chrono. I was actually testing 200gr Accubonds at the same time, looking for a good mag-length hunting load.

Only tested one lot for accuracy with each bullet. It was in a heavy crosswind (15-25 mph full value) and the target reflects that. But here's a pic.

Re: 190 grn Berger and RL-17???

I use 190vld's w/lapua brass and 47.5grn of RL-17. I would recommend starting around 46.0grn and work up.
