Range Report 190 vs 200smks

Re: 190 vs 200smks

We recently shot the new 220gr load that replaces, or at least augments the 190gr load used, and I have to say the 220gr was awesome.

Took it out to 1250 yards at RO, which under the conditions is pretty tough being a bit cold, at sea level, in fact the DA was below 0, so they performed very well over the usual 190gr stuff.

Gunfighter,

We've shot a boatload of 200's. Haven't compared them to the 190's, but compared to the 208 Amax, well... there is no comparison. The 200 does fine to 1000 yds. Once we moved out to 1500 it was pretty tough to stay on plate while the 208's were doing fine. This was in a changing wind from 10-12 mph, 6 o' clock to 9 o'clock. Wind holds with the 208 were close to half.

Friends that have shot A191 have said basically the same thing, so I'm guessing here... but I'd expect the 200 to be a very small improvement over the 190.

Context?

Re: 190 vs 200smks

Had the A19 chamber cut for new tube and the old loads with 208's were no joy no matter the load. Went back to the 190's and things improved alot. Guess I'll step up to the 220's and see how it goes.

210gr Bergers were the best loads I've ever shot in either tube of this 300wm,... but they had to be almost touching to shoot good for me and would not feed from the mag at that OAL.
Being stuck in the 60's sucks, old habits die hard.

Re: 190 vs 200smks

Was your old barrel A19 chamber also?

One of the major reasons the military adopted the 220 SMK (instead of the sleeker 210 SMK, JLK or Berger) was for the reason you cite. The 200 SMK were extremely accurate and very forgiving to load in my rifle as well as my shooting partners. I would expect the same from the 220's.

The rifles Frank was talking about were shooting 220's at 2950-2975 from 26" barrels which is quite a stout load. But at those velocities it would keep right up with the 208's fired at the MV I load them to. So a lot is going to depend on what you can get out your rifle and what you expect for brass life.

Either way, I'd expect the 220 to be quite a step up from the 190.

Re: 190 vs 200smks

No, GAP cut a match chamber in that first 10 twist tube, but she had issues with dirt, hence a different chamber this go round. My 190's (new tube is 11.27 twist)are leaving the muzzle faster than I'd like, but that is were she shoots the best, Gets to 1K right at 22.5 - 23.5 moa depending, mother.

I've some 220smk's left from 30-06 subsonic loading but don't know if the twist is there, I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Hardrock won't kick off until Feb and that will be the first chance at 1K or longer.

Re: 190 vs 200smks

It was a new spare Rock tube I had setting in the safe, everyone was out there with ship time, back then. The old Rock was still shooting MOA with 5440 down it. Never thought I'd be stepping up to 220's as the 190's an 208's were working so well. Not 100% sure the 11.27 won't spin the 220's fast enough, if I can keep the speed up. Went to Re-25 awhile back and have had better luck with compressed loads over Re-22.

Re: 190 vs 200smks

My B210VLD's shoot well inside of 190's.

I have heard of peeps shooting 190's in really long barreled .308's and often in
30GOV06's.

To my mind it makes no sense to deal with magnum recoil and not have a magnum worthy bullet. I'd never put less than a 208 in a win mag...
