I just picked up a SA Champion 1911 (used) and havent had a chance to take it to the range yet. So in the interest of seeing how everything works(short of shooting it) I loaded a dummy round in a mag, dropped the slide and then dropped the mag out of the gun.

No issues there, now comes the ejection of the dummy round, the round is pulled out just enough to drop out through the mag well. Not the typical ejection for a 1911 of around the 4-5 o'clock position.

I inspected the extractor claw for damage, and even compared it to the one on my full-size SA appeared and they appeared to be identical in physical condition.

So I guess my question is oh gurus of the 1911, is this a case of the extractor needing to be tuned or replaced? And in either case is this something that I can do or should I have a smith do it?

Thanks in advance for suggestions or ideas.

normal. You are doing it by hand and ther eis no mag int he gun. Under firing conditions, the slide moves back hell of a lot faster and there is a mag in the gun, so it will eject fine.

Shoot the damn thing, if there is a problem with it, adress it then.

I would check the extractor tension and the condition of the ejector, if those are fine, I would shoot it before changing anything. Hard to simulate actual ejection without firing.

Re: 1911 Extractor question for the pistol gurus

Thanks guys, I have already planned a range trip early in the week to run it and see if there are issues.
I guess my question was stemming from the fact that my full-size 1911 will eject(by hand) a dummy round clear of the pistol, granted not as far as a fired case would go.
Well I guess final judgement will have to wait till then, thanks again fellas.

Update: Tore it down, and cleaned it up a bit and reassembled it, repeated dummy round trial w/ mag still inserted. and Voila! its working now. I guess it heard me typing :)P
Still gonna shoot it to confirm. Thanks again.
