I recently have gotten the urge to pick up a commander length 1911 for carry.
But then I got to thinking, is it possible to buy a commander length slide and the necessary components(firing pin, sear, guide rod, match barrel/bushing, etc....), and put it on my 5" 1911's full-size frame.
I imagine a little tweaking would be necessary, but am I crazy for thinking this, and is it even worth while to attempt to do this?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

I dont see where it would be a problem to do so. But I dont see where you would benefit. Whenever Ive toted a 1911 it was never the barrel length that I had a hard time concealing but rather was the full length grip. The

Outsyd,
I understand your point about the butt of the pistol, but can hide it pretty well on my frame. I am lookin to do this primarily to see if I can avoid purchasing another gun. Although with the way I usually do things It might be cheaper to buy a new commander 1911.

Guns are like women, we like to think we're going to keep them forever, but in point of fact, we rarely do. You have to think about how the value of your 1911 will be greatly diminished plus all the work done to convert it will be money down the drain, when the purchase of a new pistol will be a more sound investment should you ever decide to part with it and/or your fullsize piece.

Re: 1911 Guru's - I have a question

It will not work without modification to the frame.

The commander frame has shorter frame rails to allow the shorter slide to still make full travel.
If you put a commander slide on a Gov model frame it will short cycle.

Just an FYI for those that dont know him, for several years, RADcustom was one of the main 1911 smiths at Clark Custom Guns in Keithville, LA and now Princeton, LA. He dont know much but he do know 1911's

Thats the same CCG's as in Jim Clark Sr. & Jim Clark, Jr.

Re: 1911 Guru's - I have a question

RADcustom- I have been tossing around the same idea for differnt reasons, if the frame rails were modified to fit the commander slide would I still be able to use the GM slide on the 'modified' frame? Or would this cause issues with overtravel and possibly cause damage?

Re: 1911 Guru's - I have a question

It could be made to work.

You would need to cut the front of lugs on the 5" barrel vertical like the commander barrel and perhaps make a spacer for the spring guide to stop the gov. slide at its original location.

You wouldn't want the bushing hitting the locking lugs on top of the barrel.

As long as you modified the right pieces to maintain the original tolerances for each setup, it would work fine.
