I am going to be shooting my first match with pistol stages and am looking for input on recommendrd holsters. Looking for likes/dislikes and what your currently running. Pistol is a Colt Government.

Matches will be sniper/3 gun, and has to work shooting prone, probably a drop leg.

Thoughts?

When I shot at an idpa match everyone ran a basic kydex type holster. I used a serpa holster and liked it a lot. I beleive the level two just has a button that is depressed with your index finger so it's just as fast as a holster without retention.

Plus the serpa can be changed from wearing on the hip or on the theigh, you just buy an additional hardware peice. I didn't explain it well but check it out on blackhawk's website.

Some matches when you go prone with drop leg it is considered breaking the 180. I think USPSA considers going prone with any holstered handgun a 180 violation. The SERPA is an okay holster, however Bladetech makes a dropped and offset kydex belt holster that is the shit. I have one with a CR speed belt and Safariland mag pouches. For a drop leg you could also look at the Safariland rigs with a regular thumbbreak strap because dirt or an impediment can get under the tab on the serpas rendering them useless.

The dropped and offset rig from Bladetech is great, as mentioned above...never been prone with it, though. Sidearmor worked great for me, even urban prone and prone.

Re: 1911 holster for tactical rifle/3 gun matches

I run a Safariland 6004 for work and I picked up a second one last month to stay on my sniper rig.

If you pull the top leg strap you can run the thigh rig pretty high. This will keep it from flapping when you run and will result in a faster/smoother draw as well.

If you don't need a drop rig, go with something belt mounted. I run it because my entry vest requires a drop holster and I don't want to have to remember that it's dropped on my entry rig and not on my sniper rig.

Yes the 6004 is more expensive than the SERPA, but when I looked at them side by side there was no comparison.

If you get the hawk, I would get the non Serpa version. That said, I prefer horse hide holsters. I had a Kramer for my 1911, and I now have one for my glock. They are worth the money.

Think I am going with the Safariland 6004. Been on the prowl for one, have missed two in the sales section. Keeping my eyes peeled. I wouldnt use Blackhack gear to wipe my ass with.

USA MADE for me, where products are made heavily sways my decision.

Serpa's are junk, known to break and banned from most major training facilities for safety issues. 6004 if you want a drop leg, Raven Concealment for anything else. Personally I don't like drop leg holsters, I prefer to train as I would carry everyday. I set up my training gear to mimic my daily carry holster location.

Re: 1911 holster for tactical rifle/3 gun matches

Drop leg holsters look really 'tactical', but anyone who has worn a drop leg knows that it's a recipe for bashing the pistol against almost everything you use for cover, including the ground.

It also subjects the pistol to torque when you run, making it want to exit the holster in an opposite direction from the one you are travelling in.

If you are carrying so much equipment on your belt, chest rig and pack that there is absolutely no place else to carry a pistol, and you jog no faster than an infantryman carrying 120 pounds of kit, then a drop leg is a useful option.

But for civilian matches there are better ways to keep a pistol accessible while keeping the rear sight out of the mud when prone.

Re: 1911 holster for tactical rifle/3 gun matches

I picked up a 6004 from Michigan Police Supply in Lansing. It has the drop leg, and they gave me a smoking deal on the MOLLE kit, to attach the holster to a vest. Great versitility, to see what will work best.
