Gunsmithing 1911 Re-Finishing questions

So I've a 1920's C133000 series 1911 passed down from a few generations and I want to preserve it for years to come. I want to do the pistol justice and I want it to last for a lot longer. My questions are this.....

- Re- Blueing or Cerakote (The pistol is showing some surface rust from handling and storage and I want to stop it, but not do a great injustice by ruining the value/sentimentalism of the pistol. I also want to be able to shoot it and enjoy it from time to time)

- Parts replacement? (Springs, firing pin ect. I want it last longer and like I said enjoy it from time to time.)

I had one I wanted to finish, what I did was bead blast it and then through it in the bluing tanks. It turned out great. Seem to make the bluing more durable.

Didn't hurt the shooting ability a bit. Get a chuck of steel (old barrel or what ever) and try it to see if its what you like.

We do CeraKote but in my opinion a good bluing job is what you seek. Not turning down work just thinking of your situation.

Is parkerizing an option for you? I love the look and it wears better than blue.

If all the parts are original, you should just keep it as it is. The value will decrease if you have it refinished.

This was kinda my thought too. Pretty sure a refinish job kills value and collectability.

"Doing the pistol justice" would be to lightly wipe off surface rust with a rag, or at most a plastic dish scrubber, and then maintain a light coat of oil until you pass it along to its next owner.

Alrighty, that was my other option the piece in question is in a case inside a gun locker,, from time to time (when I get some leave) I come home and scope it out. I know others have as well, just the forward grip edge is what is corroding and i want to stop it, Im going to look into some nice cleaning rags and alternate storage for it. I've been reading Walt Kuleck's "The M1911 complete owners guide" and really want the old guy to last. Thanks fella's thats why I come here!
