i have a springfield armory 1911, started life as a gov't model, loaded

and now i would like to have some work done to it

i do not want to break the bank , just a tactical package etc.,

no a full customization

thanks in advance

and if there are any in TN , i would prefer to use a home town person as well

+1...there are a lot of exceelent custom gunsmiths out there. the biggest issue is that most of the best ones have long, long waits. If I was going with a full custom gun I would (and have) get in line with one of these guys.

If however, you know what you want and want to have a few specific things done to enhance reliability and/or ergonomics, I can heartily recommend Springfields Custom Shop. Excellent work, reasonable prices and quick turn around.

Last time I checked, they weren't doing much more custom work and were focusing on their mfg. I recall them deferring all work to another smith for quite some time.

I agree with this one too. I have a loaded model and I sent it back to Springfield. They did an awsome job on everything. I'm really happy with it.

For what it's worth I didn't do one of the "packages" that they offer. Mine was a loaded and I had them install a Nowlin Barrel, checker the front strap, a trigger job, new front sight, and a carry bevel. I was happy with it and I'd make them my first choice now. Just go to Springfeild's web site and then to the Custom Shop, you can find a price list on packages or just on the changes you want.

Good Luck

By the way, here is mine after the Springfield Custom Shop got done, you cant really see any thing different on the outside other than the checkering but it's super smooth now and shoots WAY better than me.

Without question, go to Benny Hill at Triangle Shooting Sports. Best bang for the buck pistolsmith hands down and is one of those guys that just knows how to make a 1911 sing. The kicker is that he's too cheap for his own good.

P.S. Depending on what you want done, I could recommend other/less detailed work.

Miller is a great smith, but like most of the more recognized names you will wait close to two years or more before your gun is ready to go.
