id like to find a match barrel, and tuned trigger for my SA 1911 "loaded" manly looking for drop in's, with the least amount of gunsmithing. Probably not very likely, but would like to see whats to offer.

Re: 1911 work?

Thumper,

If you have fitted stuff before I say go for it. If not, you might want to look at letting someone else fit it. The engagement area for the barrel can give you what might seem to be full lockup depending on the link size, but it can leave the slide no longer flush with the rear of the frame. Also, you will need some headspace gauges and the like. You CAN fit one yourself, but it may not come out exactly as you envisioned. Also, the trigger can be a little fiddly when messing with the bow and attempting to get it to ride in the frame without too much friction. Either way, do what you feel the safest with. If you are a capable metal worker it shouldn't be an issue. Kart makes an EZ fit barrel.

Re: 1911 work?

Josh is right if your not mechanically inclined it might be better to send to a smith. I have a very good one I can hook you up with.. but its not hard to do yourself if you pay attention to detail..

Re: 1911 work?

i am a perfectionist when it comes to anything, but this sounds like a job for a smth, get it done right the first time. What type of parts do you recommend for accuracy, and reliability?

Re: 1911 work?

One more quick pic of what happens when the barrel is not fit properly. He thought it was, but there is a lot to clean up on the slide to frame fit. Look at the frame rails protruding out the back of the slide. That area should be flush. I have an SA as well. Their custom shop does AWESOME work. I have also had work done by Alex Hamilton at Ten Ring Precision and Ray Parga at Del Valle Gunsmithing. However, since you own a Springfield, why not send it to them to fit a barrel? Just my $.02

Here is the link. He has disabled photo leeching so you will have to click to see it.

Bad Frame to Slide fit. This is due to the barrel.

Re: 1911 work?

If you dont have any experience then you shouldn't attempt to do it yourself. Its best to spend a little more and send it to SA Custom shop, than end up with an expensive piece of junk. Plus, SA custom shop has pretty fast turn around and they aren't that expensive.

Actually, if you'd read the whole website, you'd realize that he acknowledges that, and claims there's nothing he can do about it.

Got it. I didn't have time to read the entire thing. The title of the photo is "Done Right". I just made an assumption based on the title. Anyway, best of luck to the OP.

I'm sure "done right" refers to his work, not the half ass machine work done by other people on the parts before he received them.

Re: 1911 work?

Nowlin makes a good match grade drop in. You'll need a trigger stirrup from Brownells to do a trigger right and a brass hammer. Either Wilson, or my preference. An Ed Brown Videki National Match. You'll need 200 and 400 grit sandpaper to smooth the sides on ur trigger bow. Smooth file would be good too. If your wanting to do a complete trigger job look @ a C&S drop in kit.

Re: 1911 work?

There are drop in and match grade barrels. The tolerances of the 1911/2011 do not allow for one manufacturer to produce a barrel that will "drop in" and fit properly with the correct lock up. A missed timed gun will either be unreiable, inaccurate, beat your frame/slide up or all of them combined.

Here is a PDF for fitting a barrel that might be of assistance from Schuemann Barrels.

Proper fitting from a qualified gunsmith is suggested. My two cents worth.

Re: 1911 work?

Out of curiousity, why do you want to put a match barrel in your Loaded 1911? Is there something wrong with it? Is it not accurate enough?

The reason I ask if that I have found Springfield barrels to be very accurate, especially for a production gun, and more importantly, more accurate than I am. As long as the barrel out shoots me, there is no reason for me to spend money on a match barrel and the subsequent work required to make it run.

You may find that your money would be better spent getting a NM bushing fitted as well as the slide-frame fit tightened. Springfield Custom shop puts out top notch work without an extraordinarily long wait time.

Just my two cents, hope it helps.
