Accuracy:
Before you buy it, cycle the slide, is it gritty or smooth. Try to get the slide to move side to side, try to do the same with the barrel.

you can get a basic (GI) in Springfield, Para or Taurus in the $500 to $600 range. I would figure to add a SA extended magwell ($75 + fitting) and a S&A high rise grip safety ($30.00 + fitting) before too long especially if you are like me and have "man" hands. Believe me you will want that hi-rise beavertail the first time you get "hammer bite" which being a noob will probably happen in the first 2 boxes you run it through.
I admit some models have both features, but I do not like springfields minimal thumb safeties, the huge lump on their grip safeties or their cluttering of a good design with ambidexterous safeties. (If I am shooting lefty, my right hand is buggered and I am in a situation where I DO NOT need a thumb safety) As far as target sights go,<span style="font-weight: bold"> all you need is the front sight</span>, target sights snag, slow you down and absorb your money.

-plinking
-possible concealed carry, but not main intended use
-possible competition down the road but not a high priority"
Uses:
Any 1911 will take care of plinking and self defence, concealment is a bit rougher as it is 1) heavy and 2) a full size handgun.
With the two changes listed above you can compete in IPSC or other action comps, probably not place first, but also not unheard of and if you really really get into it you can always go out and buy a $3000 pistol. (FYI one of my buddies uses an off the shelf para, his kid placed 3rd the first time he went out, would have been 1st for speed and accuracy, but he kept fouling)
If you think you might want to get into "Wild Bunch" you are forced to use the GI model.
Forget about undersize frames, might as well get a chick gun as a shortened 1911. John Browning was a friggin genius and he went with 5" for a reason.
Another +2 freebie for you GET CHIP MCCORMIC SHOOTING STAR MAGAZINES. Get them in SS, get them with the optional base pads. I kid you not, do not even think about any other mag. Get them!</div></div>

What is your experience with 1911's, and all of the brands of 1911's which you specifically mentioned above? </div></div>
Please be more specific, what did I say that contradicts the rest of the shooting community and what makes yo think the makes and models I listed are not good choices for a beginner with limited funds?</div></div>
It was bolded for you. Sig, Taurus, and Para Ord are all terrible 1911 makers.
Recoil springs should be replaced every 3k at a minimum. Rear sights are typically necessary items for shooting a pistol, too. Extractors are also wear items in the 1911.

I have shot 20K thru my first Para P-14 with no problems, and 5K thru my second Para P-14 with no problems. I have went 1000 rounds of dirty lead ammo between cleanings with no jams. I would buy another Para in a hart beat.

I have friend with a Sig 1911. It has less than 1K rounds thru it , but so far it has been flawless. I have learned thru 25 years of shooting 1911's that some are all that, and some are problematic. If you get a good one, keep it. If one does not run, trade it off. I have seen good and bad from all the manufactures, even the big name ones. That said, the trigger on a good 1911 is a thing of beauty. And well worth screening a few models to find.
I have friend with a Sig 1911. It has less than 1K rounds thru it , but so far it has been flawless. I have learned thru 25 years of shooting 1911's that some are all that, and some are problematic. If you get a good one, keep it. If one does not run, trade it off. I have seen good and bad from all the manufactures, even the big name ones. I used to work next door to Bullseye in San Rafael. Shooting my pride and joy Kimber Gold Combat there one day, another guy shooting there said "try this" and handed me a Valtro. It made my Kimber look and feel frankly a bit shit. They had another one for sale in their gun case, so I grabbed it. That was Dec of '01 and it cost me $1200, pretty much every $ I had...No prizes for guessing who the guy was....

for the price he quoted, they were indeed the best,
as far as para, the fastest shooter in the world is 23 (no sponsorship so no name recognition and his first name is not jerry...)
If you read again, I said rear sights are NOT necessary the better your pistol fits you and the more you practice with it the less you need it, why do you think the emphasis is on the front sight, not the rear? hope you enjoy that nice painful gouge your target sight gives you the first time you really need to draw it in a hurry. In fact I know of at least one instance where competitors forgot to install their rear sights and carried the match only later realizing their mistake.

Bullshit. Taurus 1911s are the worst on the market. Their front strap is so squared that it feels like you're holding onto a 2x4.
They have a nice bundle of features but the fit is absolute shit and the parts are cheap crap. </div></div>
I never said they are good,or that I would pay for one,
I said they are good enough for their price point, which is exactly the market they were meant to fill, Sure there are no Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, or Cylinder and slide parts in them. At least they don't have proprietary parts and they can be had for under 600 bucks. The Springfield GI's are a better gun in the same price range, but they are missing many of the upgraded parts/sights that most guys think they need.
Personally, I'm sticking to my stable of STI's, 70 series colts, Springfields, Caspian frame and slide customs, and Series 1 Kimbers.

If this guy is so fast, why isn't he sponsored? He must not win anything, ever...
He might have the fastest time on a qualifier stage, but I doubt he's ever done anything of any significance. Having shot against all of the SVI Team Infinity, as well as Eddie Jimenea, Athena Lee and the "Phillipino Death Squad" I can tell you that there are lots of "good competitors" that are sponsored on some level. You don't have to be one of the biggest 3 or 4 names to get a polo shirt and gas money to go to matches. I'd venture to say all you need is to be is a visible Master Class shooter with nothing better to do than shoot, reload, and travel to matches.
I would also be very interested to see someone clean out a decent match without a rear sight. When I say decent I'm talking about a 7 or 8 stage match with some Virginia count stages and stages with 25-40 yard shots at steel, not some fastest-finger-hoser local club stuff. I would love to proven wrong on this one...

I'd venture to say all you need is to be is a visible Master Class shooter with nothing better to do than shoot, reload, and travel to matches.
I would also be very interested to see someone clean out a decent match without a rear sight. When I say decent I'm talking about a 7 or 8 stage match with some Virginia count stages and stages with 25-40 yard shots at steel, not some fastest-finger-hoser local club stuff. I would love to proven wrong on this one...

I agree you dont need to be a master to have gas money, but a car helps. Keep in mind this is a teenager, this video was made in late april, he went to exactly 1 match where he fouled numerous times but made it back on accuracy and speed to take 3rd. After this he had to mess with Hurricane Ike and aftermath, he is now in the service, give him a few years to grow up.

Was he using a VM-II or a Summer Special? 2 best holsters I ever owned were Milt Sparks. My big competitive days were 04-07 so we was a little before my time. After goofing up an opportunity to finish my masters degree and screwing up a few good relationships, I've taken some time off, and I doubt I'll ever get back into it that seriously again...
That being said it's about as fun and addicting as anything can get. And it's a helluva lot better that what most guys are doing with their 20's

Space city is a wonderful match, The one time we traveled to PSC it was rained out (glad I didn't drive that time). I used to frequent Impact Infinity and that's about as far south as I ever got on a frequent basis. If you ever see anybody from Brazosland Pistoleros there, tell them "Smurf" says hi.
As far as speed goes, I hope your prodigy learns that he can't outrun his misses
It took me about 18 months after I started to up my speed to get that under control. The best advice I got was to relax and compete at about 95% of the speed you practice at. It's counter intuitive since most guys get amped up and try to compete at 200% (testosterone anyone???)
It would be nice to see some young un-sponsored blood mix it up with the old guard and come out on top. All the big names should be getting older and slower, but it doesn't seem to be happening.

I wouldn't go without target sights on a 1911 for carry. They make a big difference for me shooting passed 12ft or so.
