for my uses at 50 - 600 yards what power variable would be better for me? most shooting will be done closer....... 50- 100 yards but 200-400 yards are used as well. sometimes out to 600 yards but not much further. hunting is the main use for this optic with a side order of fun on the ranch. i cant decide between a 2.5-10x vortex pst but am now looking hard at 4-16x vortex pst. can you help?

Re: 2.5-10x or 4-16x for me?

Its my firt scope so I don't really know. I think I will want a ffp. I thought all the pst's were ffp? And yes, I was going to mount a red dot for 0-50 yards. So I guess what I'm asking is.........is 4x being the lowest magnification level on the 4-16x.......is that too much scope for most of my use bieng 200 yards or closer most of the time? Keeping in mind I will want/need to go further sometimes.

Re: 2.5-10x or 4-16x for me?

I know. It keeps getting sugested to me. It looks great. I would most likley take it ever the vortex' but the lack of illumination is a deal breaker for me. This will be used mostley for night preditor control. Its a shame swfa won't offer illumination on those.

Re: 2.5-10x or 4-16x for me?

The illumination on many cheaper scopes is poor, often far too bright. May want to look at some of the Trijicon scopes with tritium/fiberoptic illumination if hunting at night with standard scope is priority.

I think you'll find 10X on the top end allot more or a hinderance than 4X on the bottom. Get the 4-16X, if all else is equal. The 2.5-10 will do the job good enough if there's considerable savings to be had, or better features.

So the 4x for a moving target at 100 yards cann be a lttle much huh?

Re: 2.5-10x or 4-16x for me?

4X on a moving target at 100 yards is a piece of cake, provided you can hit a mover at 100 yards. I think either power choice would be fine. Really depends on which scopes you're looking at, and how small a target you are looking to hit at 600 yards. If you are comparing that power in same scope manufacturer and the weight difference isn't too bad I would choose the 4-16X.

I have anouther contender now as I am sorting through the 9 page weaver tactical 3-15x thread. I wonder how the weavers illumination does in the dead of night.

Re: 2.5-10x or 4-16x for me?

I'd think the Weaver 3-15 would be the perfect compromise...increased FOV at 3x with 15x of top-end magnification.

$699 IIRC from SWFA, but if you can find a lower price online by doing a search they will hold good to their 110% price match.

Re: 2.5-10x or 4-16x for me?

I have been using 4x14's on my hunting rifles for some time now and think they are just about perfect for me. I do most of my hunting in the western part of our country so the lower end doesn't get a whole lot of use, but I have found it to be OK in the dark timber. Good hunting.
