i didnt know what the hell a 20 moa base was until i started googling my ass off. from what i gather a, a 20 moa base cants your optic down ward 20moa to give you more adjustment range when shooting at extended distances. my question to you.....is there a down side or a reason i should not use one? i am looking to scope my 18"5 m1a/m14. i will be shooting from rages of 50-200 yards and some times further but not often. should i use a 20moa base for "just in case or will" it make my close range game more difficult and cumbersome? is a 20moa base really just for dedicated long range? btw some of the mounts i was considering any way for other reasons just happen to be 20moa..... which is what lead to this question.

Well yes, it is mainly for getting more adjustment range from your scope. Most people don't need to 'down' their scope, so canting it forward allows for more 'up'
(shit time of day, can't remember the actual wording haha).

However, it does a few negative things. For one, it increases the objective height on the rifle. Something that is already an issue with most M1/M14 Patterned rifles and something most people look at reducing. It can also make it more difficult to get the scope low on the rifle, but not by much.

For ranges under even 500yd, you usually won't need a canted base. However, like you said, there may be times you want that extra adjustment, so it can't hurt.

In my opinion i don't know why you wouldn't want a 20moa base. Yes, it does lower the front of your scope, but its so little its not noticeable.

Its not necessary if you have the adjustment you need for your intended range, but its usually better to have it and not need it than no to have it and find that you do need it and end up buying two bases

hey thanks guys. it sounds like a bad idea for me. it will most likely be mounting an optic with 50 objective lens or bigger to the new vltor casv railed m14 handgaurd ( basically like mounting on a flat top ar15 with railed handgaurd.....so one large straight rail). i am going to have a hard enough time getting a large objective lens to clear the front end of the rail with out canting it down to boot. thanks again guys.
