20 MOA base or not?

I would like some opinions on this. I am having my Remmy .308 built and the barrel cut to 20". I have a Nightforce 5.5x22-56 w/ HS turrets and 100MOA built into the scope. Do I need, or should I get, the 20 MOA base or stick with a 0 MOA base. I will primarily be deploying the rifle for LEO purposes, but would like to push it out to 1000yds+ if I ever get the opportunity.

Thanks in advance for the help

Even though you scope has plenty of travel you should get the 20 MOA base. The 20 MOA base offers advantages over the flat (0 MOA base) without any downside. You'll be able to zero at 100 yards and push out to 1,000 or so, if and when the time comes. Also, if you ever sell the rifle and/or base a 20 MOA base is easier to sell than a 0 MOA base.

Re: 20 MOA base or not?

Agreed: You don't need it, but there's no reason not to have it a few good reasons to get it.

Consider that a 5.5-22 might be too much scope for a short LE rifle and that a 3.5-15x50 might serve you better.

Re: 20 MOA base or not?

20 MOA base will give you that much more up travel. The scope, new from NF, is basically centered. The reticle should have roughly 50 MOA up and 50 down. By using the 20 MOA base, you are adding that to the up travel of the scope.

A canted scope base is always a bonus for long range shooting.

Re: 20 MOA base or not?

total elevation = moa base + (moa scope / 2)

in your case: 20 + (100/2) = 70moa

Well theoretically anyway.

Do you need it? Not really, seeing as you can go to 1000 easily with the scope and a 0moa rail. But 20moa can't hurt if that is what you are afraid of.

Re: 20 MOA base or not?

Before you decide, try both. Mount the base, mount your scope, tighten everything up, and go to the range.

I look at it a little diferently.

A 20 MOA base may hurt if you do not have an adjustable cheek piece. That is why you see people with stock packs built up with mouse pads, neoprene, etc... Sometimes people do not adjust well to that.

Especially deploying this as LEO, if you get a better and more consistent cheek weld with a 0MOA base, I suggest that is what you use.

Re: 20 MOA base or not?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I didn't think I needed the 20 MOA, but I wasn't sure it would hurt if I got it. "it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it". As far as trying both, it's gonna be a custom built base and I'm gonna put the action in the AI AX Chassis. It will have an adjustable comb so I should be good there. As far as the 5.5-22 vs the 3.5-15, I was on the fence. Currently my issued rifle has Leupold 4.5-14 so I figured I didn't loose much on the low end, but gained quite a bit in the top end. I'm in a pretty large county with just about every kind of terrain imaginable, so that swayed my decision. A local LEO sniper teamleader, who is also a Nightforce rep and competitive shooter, was actually the one to initially recommend the 5.5-22.
Anyway fellas, I'm gonna withe the 20 MOA based on the feedback here. Thanks for the help.
