I am in the process of having a USMC spec M40A3 built. I plan on using the S&B 3-12X50 PM II Military scope with it. If I use the 30 MOA optical platform will I still be able to use this rifle scope combination for closer distances such as 100 yards? Or should I use a 20 MOA for occasional 100 yard use?

Re: 20 or 30 MOA?

If the scope is in mils, then you have 220 cm of elevation per the S&B specs. This is about ~85 MOA of adjustment. With a 30 MOA rail, you should have about ~12.5 MOA remaining down travel in the scope with a 100 yard zero. With a 20 MOA base, you will have more down travel (~22.5 MOA).

If it's an MOA turret scope, the S&B specs show only 56 MOA of travel. With a 30 MOA base, it puts you about 2 MOA short of a 100 yard zero. So, if it's an MOA turret scope, go the 20 MOA base. If it's a mil turret scope (which it sounds like it is), then either base will work.

It all depends on what distance you will be doing most of your shooting. I run all mine at 20 MOA and have shot at 1200 yards in matches without any issues.

Looks like the S & B scopes have a really good elevation spread that will get you down to 100 with either rail. If you are custom building, you could spec a 25 MOA rail and get the best of both worlds.
