I'm looking to purchase a new scope for a 308 build for long range ("long" used loosely). I have decided on a Competition NF but am torn between the FCR and the DDR radicals. I decided on the Nightforce after talking with a guy I meet at the range and he had a NSX 40x which he allowed me to look through, I was blown away by the clarity. I have a 25x Leopold on a target AR and it doesn't come close to the clarity of that NF.

I want to use the 308 for target shooting and maybe in the future some competition shooting but, the $2300 ish is a lot of money for me and I don't want to make a mistake by getting the wrong radical. I should go with the FCR but, I really like the DDR. I like the DDR because how clean it is and if I can use the turrets to adjust each range then it should work for target shooting. However, If I get to long distances I might run out of turret adjustment that the FRC scale would allow me to make up. Being new to distance shooting maybe you guys can offer some not to technical help?

Thanks

I have a 2013 NF competition with the CTR reticle. Nice optics but very limited in its range of use. If you are planning on shooting bench rest or F Class it is a very good piece of equipment. For other applications not so. The windage and elevation are 1/8 moa which works well for minute adjustments when targets are at a known distance and won't vary. I use mine on occasion but most of the time it sits in my safe. I would look at the FCR-1 reticle because it will allow hold overs for windage and elevation. I spoke to NF about changing out the reticle to the FCR-1 and adding the zero stop and plan on doing so in early summer.

Also having max magnification isn't all it's cracked up to be. You can shoot any discipline with 25x and do well.

Long story short, get yourself a FFP scope. Study the subject so you can make the best decision the first time.

Take my S&B 5-25 with the radical H-59 "reticle" as a example. smile

Mounted on the tactical rifle I can use the reticle to hit steel a mile away without dialing or I can dial because it has enough elevation travel to do so.

I can also mount it on my air rifle and compete in Field Target comps because it focuses down to 10 yards. If I wanted to I could shoot steel 200Y away with that combo as well.

I can use it as low as 5x for hunting close in if needed to take advantage of the wider FOV.

The mil values are constant on any magnification, "not the case with SFP scopes", so on any mag I can range, measure, lead, holdover and holdoff without worrying about the mil values being different like they are with SFP scopes.

The best way to put it is I have chosen a scope which is extremely versatile that I can use in practically any situation I could find myself in.
