I just purchased a .300 Win Mag conversion for my Desert Tech to compliment my 6.5 Creedmoor. I reload and would like to start with the right bullet out of the gate.

I already have 300 rounds of the 208 that I've used for my 300 blackout subsonic loads, but I'm sure I could run the 225s with great success in both calibers as well.

From my research it appears that I may be able to squeeze 2900 fps out of the 208s and 2800 or of the 225s.

1. Which bullet would you recommend for my platforms and ELR?
2. Do you have any experience with both?
3. If so, are the velocities listed above reasonable out of a 26" Desert Tech?

Thanks so much!

I shoot an AI-PSR and am on my 2nd barrel so I have shot just about every thing from 185Hybrid Berger up to all the A-MAX and ELD-M and Sierra's. I am using a 26in M40 contour 1-10 twist barrel. The 2 best preforming bullets for my rifle have been the 208 ELD-M and the 215 Hybrid. I don't push either to hard. The ELD-M is 77.0 of H-1000 gets me 2891 avg with a spread of 13 FPS over 10 rounds tested. The 215 Hy 74.5 H-1000 yielding 2852 avg with a spread of 11 over 10 rounds. I am lucky I have 3000 meters of desert 15 minutes from my house so I shoot as far as I can see. So now accuracy, we had our monthly 1000 yard match today shooting the 215 Berger Hy 215 I took 2nd with a 95 1x so not bad as their were 16 shooters. Lost to 97 2x
From what is see in my 26 in barrel you could get 2900 but the accuracy node looks to be just under 2900.
Good luck

Thanks for the insight. Have you tried the 230 bergers or 225 hornady bullets by chance?

I have a hard time breaking from the .777 bc of the 225 to the .690 of the 208...

No the heaviest I shot was the 220 SMK. The 208 both A-MAX and ELD-M and the 215 Hy shot better so I never went heavier. I have shot all three past 1800 yards with good results depending on wind.

Awesome - I may just stick with the 208s unless I get some first hand experience from someone with the 225s...

I regularly use 225’s on a steyr SSG08 300 win mag @2800 on H100V
Great results up to 1500 meters , struggling on a 1609 (mile)

I am shooting the 215 berger hybrids at 2900+ and love them. These should be on your list of options

I shoot the 225s out of my 26” 300WM. I’m getting 2860 -2900 using H1000. I do seat my very long and load them single shot. It can shoot in the .4s when I do my part

Shoot the most accurate bullet with enough BC to get the job done. If it's not accurate high BC's will just get you closer misses.
This. If 208s shoot run them till the wheels fall off. Check your accuracy at 1000 yards, and your extreme spread. If they are shooting decent at 1k and your velocities aren't a brush fire. Run on. High bc is super badass in a calculator. But whatever shoots can be calculated with more drop. Good luck.

I got sick of sorting bullets and quit shooting hornady rifle bullets all together.
Berger 215gr hybrids are the number one 300wm bullet used today. Jmo
215 hybrid and around 76gr h1000 and you’ll be happy

Shoot multiple ten shot groups with each at 1000 yards on paper and choose the one that produces the lower amount of group elevation spread.
Good shooting!

hi mate, I shoot a 300wm with the 225 elm and have hits at 3km here in Australia, it took 70 mil of elevation to achieve this with a 7.5 second flight time. wind is the real game here but still landed at 800 ft/s . my mv is 2970 ft/s if that hels you at all.

I run 225 eldm out to a mile then swap to 230gr ATips to go farther out

hi mate, I use the Hornady 225 eldx at 3km no worries, just took 70 mil of elevation , a combination of ivey mount and NF atacr. 7.5 sec flight time

225gr eld m
76.8gr H1000
FGMM 215 primers
Win cases
.030" off lands
2920fps from Krieger 26" barrel
Single digit SD and accurate.

What BC on the 225s gave the correct solution for this shot?

I use Hornady ELD M 208, ELD-X 212 and Lapua Scenar L 220 grain in my .300 WM. All with great results.
I have tried the old classic 190 grain SMK but I feel that the .300 win mag really shines when you push the heavier pills.
Been using H1000, VV N170 and Norma MRP powders.

I've taken the 225 ELD-M's out to 2900yds+ and they have been extremely consistent. A G7 of .385 works well for distances in the subsonic zone at 1400' elevation.

73.6gn H1000
ADG Brass
FED 210M
2900fps from a 1:10 twist 27" barrel.
