Gunsmithing 22-250 to 220 swift

Re: 22-250 to 220 swift

I'm curious as to why you are wanting to? I have an old Hornady manual (circa 1967, so the loads are not wimpy by any means), and they show only about 100fps increase in mv with the Swift over the 22-250. That's not enough to justify the expense and hassle in my mind. I see it as a reason as to why the Swift faded after the introduction of the Varminter. If your -250 shoots good as it is, it looks like you are trying to fix something that is not broken. If you are going after every bit of velocity, you would be better off going with the improved version of the -250. I haven't looked at the data, but I'l bet it's not hard to equal or beat the Swift with a blown-out -250, and it would be an easy job for a 'smith.

Re: 22-250 to 220 swift

depending on the rounds down the barrel the chamber will need to be set back for either rechamber job for the 22-250 Ai or the 220 swift , just ALOT further back for the swift due to it being a more tapered case than the 22-250.

if the barrel hasen't had a hard life then just setting it back .050" and rechamber to 22-250 AI would be the way to go , the speed can be as good or better than the swift , way longer case life and now Lapua offers brass for the 22-250. their would be no reason to use a 220 swift at all.
if your looking for still more speed then maybe look at the 22-243. but unless your shooting heavy bullet from a long barrel your not gonna gain much from the 243 case over the 22-250 Ackley imp.

Re: 22-250 to 220 swift

I have thought about doing the AI to a few rounds but I never thought of doing it to the 250. After looking it up, man that really seems like a great varmint round. I almost changed a 250 to a 220... glad I didn't. Thanks for the information.

Re: 22-250 to 220 swift

I have shot both for 40 years and many barrels and have both now. As all the replys have said, bad idea. I think the preformance of the Swift is great, but the case is a turkey. 22-250 is great. You can get Lapua brass for the 250. Not much on improving it though. Do not care for the 40 degree shoulder. You could chamber for the 22/6mm or the 22/243 I think off the top of my head. I am not a fan of most of this stuff. The 22-250 is tough to beat. Loaded hot, barrel life is not that long on any of them and the 22-250 is about the best barrel life wise. Beyond that you reach the point of deminishing returns IMO.
