Good morning fellers

A friend has a .22 conversion kit for an AR15 he's trying to sell. I'm interested in it but tried it out and had some feeding issues. I would miss picking up the next round on occasion and it would fully seat the round so it could fire on others.

My question is if I replace or stretch the spring on the bolt assembly and in the mag will this go away? Just looking for some of your guy's experience's.

Re: .22 conversion kt?

Who is the mfg of the .22LR conversion kit in question and what ammo were you using?

Not all conversions were created equally and, as with everything, not all ammos were either. It may be a kit problem and it may be an ammo problem (or a little of both).

Re: .22 conversion kt?

I have not personally run one of the CMMG conversions, but from what I have read on them when I was considering a purchase of a conversion kit, they can have some problems with feeding/ejecting (primarily dependent on the mags they are used with and the ammo). CMMG specifically says that Remington .22LR ammo may not work properly, so I'd bet that is the source of at least part of the difficulties you had. Remington Goldens are pretty waxy as .22lr ammo goes (not sure if that was the spec. ammo you were using since you just said "Remington"). These kits run best with HV ammo and often don't like match or lightweight ammo and rarely will they work with subs.

The other issue could be magazine-related if the next round isn't popping up quickly enough to get picked up and chambered. You might try a different mag and see if that resolves your FTFeed issue.

The other thing to consider is how many rounds have been fired through the conversion. Some need as many as around a brick of ammo to get them running 100%.

Re: .22 conversion kt?

Remington is the cheapest and shitiest .22 ammo on the market.

Federal or Winchester aren't that much more expensive and are much better quality from my experience.

Re: .22 conversion kt?

Remington Golden Bullets are widely known to function poorly in Atchisson conversions.
Generally these work well with Federal bulk 36 (or is it 38gr) HPs, the 550 packs from WalMart.

CMMG feels than no tuning should be necessary.
Others feel that a Lakeside spring kit (available from Black Dog Machine or Spike's Tactical) are helpful for troublesome units or special ammo needs (like full auto subsonic). The kit includes 3 full length recoil springs that can be cut for specific loads, along with two different reduced power hammer springs and a light disconnector spring.

A trouble shooting guide is available on CMMG's industry page on ARFcom. "Buzzing" the chamber insert with a bronze brush in a drill motor is a recommended tune to enhance chambering. Other folks use Flitz on a chamber mop.

Stainless or parked? It takes a few hundred rounds to break in these, especially the parkerized units.

My own experience involves about three Ciener units and one Spike's, lastly one Christie's lefty used in a dedicated Stag based upper. All generally run very well with a wide variety of ammo.

Re: .22 conversion kt?

Thanks a ton gents. I'll switch ammo and look at the make then give her a whirl again. If it holds up the kid will probably take me for a little money. Thanks again.

I have a CMMG kit and it works great with about any ammo to include CCI Standard Velocity. To break it in make sure it is cleaned up and lubed well. I used Dry Slide and no problems from that time on with any ammo.
