Working on a load for a new rifle in 300 WM. I would like to use 220 or 240 SMK's on R22 and trying to reach 2900, 2950 to
3000 FPS. Rifle has a 24 inch heavy barrel.
Anyone have any load Data that will get me to these numbers
Thanks

Re: 220's & 240's in 300wm with R22

Never gassed the 220 and 240gr bullets before, but Lyman is quoting a 220gr jacketed round nose (not the bullet you want) at 2640-2772fp max load (at 3.340" OAL), 71.5gr H-4831SC.

Hornady shows 71.9gr MAX for Reloder-22 for the same bullet/OAL at 2700fps. 74.7gr MAX for Reloder-25 (2700fps), 73.9gr MAX for H-1000 (2600fps).

Lee shows a load for '240gr Jacketed bullet' but I've never used those powders shown, A-XMR-3100, Accurate 8700, A-XMR-4350. Max charges were 69.5, 84.0C, and 64.0 respectively. FPS numbers were 2617fps, 2572fps , 2567fps.

Call Sierra and ask what they recommend. I have hornady's 208gr A-Max data too if you would like it. Keep in mind these long ass bullets like the 240gr probably run a little better in a 1/9" twist, and all these loads were done with a 26" barrel.

You won't make it there with R22. You will need a slower powder, and out of a 24", I don't think it will happen still. Look at Retumbo first, then H1000. R22 will shoot well, but won't get you the velocity. Also, what twist is your barrel?

Re: 220's & 240's in 300wm with R22

I'd say good luck...probably won't happen.

I've used H1000 and Ramshot Magnum. The best I could get out my 26" AMU barrel .300 Win Mag rifle is around 2850 fps (220 SMK) without getting my loads dangerously hot.

My barrel is a 5R barrel from Rock Creek. Maybe you will need to change the barrel to 3R or something to lower the barrel resistance. The combination of that and slow powder may get you there.

Re: 220's & 240's in 300wm with R22

I'd look at the 208 AMAX, which has a better BC than the 220 and you can get it going faster. Same with the 210 VLD. 2950fps shouldn't be a problem with some RL22 or H1000 behind it.

I wouldn't even worry about 240s out of a 24" barreled 300WM.

Thanks for the replys
I am getting approx 2800 to 2825 out of my 30/06 with 208 Amax.
The reason I am building the 300 Win Mag is to gain just a little advantage over the 06. For 10 or 11 grains more powder
I guess 150 FPS is all the gain I'll get. Doesn't seem like much.
