As title states, I am trying to find a good load for my 16" AR with a 9 twist. The IMR site says for a 50gr bullet, the range is 19.9 to 21.9 grains of 4198 powder.
I ran a ladder test today and went all the way up to max and the load would not throw the bolt back far enough to grab a live round from the magazine. It ejected every round, just would not load a live round. I did not get a decent group until I shot the 21.9gr group. I also did not have any signs of pressure with any of the rounds.
I read another post on an IMR thread where a guy swore by loading 22+ gr of powder with a 50/52 bullet and got great accuracy. After I shot my reloads, I fired 10 rounds of factory Remmy UMC ammo and they cycled perfectly so I don't think I have a gas issue.
Is it safe to keep going up in small increments to see what cycles this gun and groups well. Was thinking about 22.0, 22.1 and 22.2gr to start off with.
thx, Steve
