Does anybody have a range report on a 223 ackley using 75 or 80gr a-max? Thinking about this for a new build need some input plan on using a 22in Broughton barrel 1-8 twist.
The rifles both shoot exceptionally well. The draw backs at longer ranges are the wind will really mess with you and if shooting steel, it can be tough to see hits. Great fun
I've got 2 223ai's (pics of both are in that thread). One has a #3 Brux @ 21", the other a 21" Rem Varmint Pacnor. Both are 1:8. I'm getting 3050fps with 26.6gr RL15 (work up to this in your rifle) in the Brux tube. Haven't chronoed the pacnor yet, but I found a great load accuracy-wise at 26.2gr RL15. I expect velocities to be similar, as Pacnor's tend to run a bit on the fast side.
I shot the best group of my life with the heavy 223ai - 0.092" while doing load work-up. More consistently it shoots in the .3s - same for the lightweight.
I've got two 223ai's, and love them. The ONLY reason that I shoot my 308 is to better spot misses in training and competition.
Both are 22", one is a Brux in a Shilen #3 contour, the other is a Rock 5R in M24 contour. 80gr JLK's chrono at 2950, and are more accurate than I'll ever be.
