Ideally someone with Quickload could help me out as there is no published data for this combination.
I want to try RE17 and the 80 grain Sierra and was going to start at 25.5 grains until I got to a compressed load.
I don't think I'll have room in the case to run into excessive pressure but also would prefer to play it safe.

MLC,

Without referring to QL, that should be a pretty good starting load if you use 2.555" as the COL. and WSR primers. Might want to start at 25 if using another primer. That would be where I would start development for the plain .223 with the Sierras.

QL folks don't like to have QL data in the forums. See the stickies.

Re: 223 AI RE17, sanity check

Thanks,

I wasn't looking for a full eval, just a yay or nay.

I figured that it was at least comparable to the 4350 class and that it would take some effort to get into trouble.
I think that it might work well with a long barrel and a straight 223, my hope is that the AI chamber will enable an efficient use in a shorter barrel.

My plan for now is to load up single rounds and shoot them over the chronograph(with suppressor in the yard) to see if the velocity justifies further experiments.

Re: 223 AI RE17, sanity check

I'm guessing it'll be too slow. I'm crunching powder with R-15 and don't think you'll get enough R-17 in the case. I run 26-27gr of '15, depending on brass, in formed cases.

Post up your results if you try it.

Jered, nice to see you posting!! What are you getting with 2520?

3050fps seems to be about where I'm at with '15/75Amax's and cases last forever.

Re: 223 AI RE17, sanity check

I believe 2520 is very similar to IMR 4064 in performance.
4064 is unreal accurate in my 223AI.
I will definitely post speeds when I try it.

223 AI 80 grain Sierra hBN 2.5 oal
Lapua FF case CCI BR4
33* outside
Oehler 35P 10' from muzzle.
20" Broughton 5C with SWR Omega suppressor.

<span style="font-weight: bold">28.5</span> <span style="color: #FF0000">2882</span> primer flattening

There is still room in the case for a grain or two.
The case necks were sooty up to the 27.2 grain load.
These were shot off my back porch into the yard, so I cannot report on the accuracy.
I did note that the report got sharper as velocity increased.

Re: 223 AI RE17, sanity check

I wish I had time to post more. I get so busy answering emails and phone calls that I simply run out of time. For example......it's 11:25 and here I am instead of in bed.

My rifle is a 22" 1-9. It shoots the 75 Amax @ 3060 with 28g and a BR primer. I can shoot 5 shots of that load then 5 shots of my 62g TSX load (27.5g) and still have a .5 MOA group for the most part. I have put a little more in there but she didn't like it. I shot Varget in it for a bit. It was extremely accurate but was slow. Mine doesn't even come off the rack unless something needs to be blown up so I wanted a little more speed. While I did find some other powders to be more accurate in my rifle I chose this powder because of the all around results I get. Check out this result. I think it had everything to do with the powder:
