I’m not a gunsmith at all. I was wondering if this reamer would be a good choice for 88gr eldms in a .223 AI chambered tikka? Would I take the measurement where the throat is in the diagram, and compare that to the measurement of the case head to the ogive of the projectile When seated in the case? Im planning on mag feeding them and I’ll be using mdt .223 aics mags so that will let me seat them farther out.

The 88ELD is a LONG projectile. That reamer print's freebore of .0767" will have the heal of the bullet below the neck/shoulder junction and will rob you of some capacity but should fit in a 2.550" max OAL poly AICS magazine.

If you like, I think I can get you a COAL with an 88ELD in a SAAMI .223 Remington minimum chamber (.040 freebore) tonight. I might have shot up my test batch of 88ELDs.

Alternatively, this user has posted up a variety of info regarding throats for .223 Remington and the 88ELD. The .223AI should not be much different. Search his other posts or contact him for further info.

It'd be pretty close, that PTG 223AI reamer print has a different leade angle than the SAAMI spec, then there's the tolerances of the barrel, the chamber's actual headspace, the reamer itself, etc. but it's in the ballpark. The 'smith chambering your barrel should be able to make the chamber fit what you want. Give the guy a couple dummy cartridges loaded to your OAL with the 88s and he should be able to take it from there.

It is pretty easy to open the front of the MDT poly mags with a small round file to get longer COAL to fit. I am currently running the 75gr ELDM at 2.49" with those mags in a 1-8" Tikka varmint. My next barrel will be a 1-7" 223AI for the 80 and 88 ELDM. I run the 88 in my 22BR.
