I just picked up a LMT defender(16" 1-7"). My first loads were 70gr VLD's and BLC2. They shot good, but was wondering if Varget would work well also? I've got close to 100lbs of it for my .308's and other short case chamberings I shoot. Anyone had any luck with it?

Thanks for any input!

Re: .223 and Varget....?

Sweet! Thanks bro! Might not have to get a bunch of BLC2.....

Re: .223 and Varget....?

Varget works great, I use 24.7 with 75 AMax .02 off the lands for my 223 bolt.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

I'd like to ask,

I've got some Hornady 55gr FMJ/BT that appeared on my bench somehow and the only rifle powder I use at the moment is Varget. How does Varget mix with these lightweight bullets? Good powder or inefficient?

Would be used in a Rock River AR.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

It works extremely well in my 69 smk loads, I don't think there is any reason to think it would do any worse behind a 70 vld.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

For the lighter bullets Varget will work but it really fills the case. 26-27 grains, right up to or a little into the neck.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

When I used Varget and 52-55 gr bullets, I couldn't get enough into the case to run into problems.

With the 70 vld, try 25.3 it's a hammer with 69 sierra's and they have less bearing surface. Of course start at 24.5 and go up to it. You should see two nodes when you go from there.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

I run 25 grains of Varget under 55 grainers. Gets me a mild 3050fps but is pretty accurate out of my old Colt.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

Varget is great for "heavy for caliber" .223 loads. I've had better luck with Benchmark for 55gr and down.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

for service rifle matches, I use varget at all distances, for fun shooting and bulk loading, i use either H335 or TAC with a 55 gr.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

Varget works well with heavier bullets. It works ok with lighter (<55 gr.) but there are better choices. Might want to take a look at R-15 too.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

I use 75 Hornady HPBT in LC brass, loaded to 2.26, Fed match primers, and 24.8g of Varget, in her Mini SASS. Shoots 1/2 to 3/4 and is giving me an average of 2730 in the summer and 2725 in the winter at about 700ft above sl.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

Completely agree. I tried other combos, but for 223 and 308, just too easy to load. And I think it's very clean for the cost.

about 3000fps.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

Both my bolt and gas gun shoot excellent with,
69smk
23g Varget
ccisr primer
Win brass

not a super high velocity round but very accurate

Re: .223 and Varget....?

I like Benchmark with lighter bullets so I ended up trying it with 75g amaxes in my 223 AI. It works great there too and meters great.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

23.7 grains of Varget under a 77 grain Nosler HPBT seated to mag length works really well in my DD 1-7 AR. Not the fastest but works well at 200 yards if I do my job. Anyone loading the 55 grain Barnes X with Varget?

Re: .223 and Varget....?

69 gr Smk mag length with 24.6 of Varget / Federal brass cci 400 2800 fps and 75gr Amax with 25gr Varget Federal brass cci 400 2975 fps both 1/2 moa with the same poi SWEET RRA 20" heavy 1/8 wylde

What twist rate is your .223 bolt action.

I just picked up these bullets for load development using varget also but keep reading about some 1-9 twist barrels like and some dont.

They look like a real good round and im looking forward to seeing how they perform.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

24.5 Varget with 77smk in .223 Savage PC shoots below .3 always now, other loads not so good.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

24.5 Gr Varget is a the standard
I use it over:
77gr Sierra for across the course Service Rifle 200-300/600 feeds for rapid fire
80 gr Sierra 600 single load
75 gr A-Max 600 single load (loaded long)

+1 on this!!!
I'm running about 24.4grains of Varget and the 69smks in my 1:8twst AR.

Re: .223 and Varget....?

I like Varget and go through 30-40 lbs a year of the stuff. I refuse to use it when loading with my XL650 though unless I don't care about load consistency. I prefer powders like AA2230, BL-C(2), or even H-4895 for the progressive as Varget just doesn't meter well at all. I use it exclusively in my .308 Bolt Action loads and dispense it with an RCBS Chargemaster. No metering orifice to jamb up with the Varget "Mouse Pellets".

Re: .223 and Varget....?

Varget is my "go to" powder for .223 & .308 bolt guns.
For the .223, 26.5 gr. under a Hornady 52 gr. HPBT in Rem. brass works well in my M700 VSF (0.5 MOA).

For the .308, 44.0 gr. under a Nosler J4-168 in LC-90 match brass does fine in the M700 VSSF (0.625 MOA).

Re: .223 and Varget....?

I had the Berger 80gr. VLD's doing under .4 MOA at 300 yds this last weekend with 25gr. of Varget out of my 223 AI. I don't have any chrono results yet. Here in the next few weeks I'll run them through to see what speeds I'm getting. I'm pretty dang happy about it so far.

How do you get the Varget to stay on top of the bullets?
