.223 AR load for 77gr SMK's and TAC..anyone??

Re: .223 AR load for 77gr SMK's and TAC..anyone??

Hey thanks guys. I have 16 lbs. of TAC and that is why I am seeking input from you guys that BTDT. I also have 16 lbs. of Varget and 7-8 lbs. of RL-15. My goal is accuracy....like most of us.
This will be shot out of my 20" JP rifle (1:8 twist) for 300 and 600 yard matches.

Jason....what were your mix results?

Take care,Stan

Stan,

My MP15 (1:9) liked the Nosler 77's over 23g in LC brass (sub-moa). SMK's ran slightly larger groups but still OK. If I sped them up they opened up fast. I load them at 24g for my son for better terminal ballistics at the cost of accuracy (about 2700 fps @ 2 moa).

Your 1:8/20" should give you the combo to make them work optimally. Load up some OCW and shoot 'em.

BTW my friends got best accuracy with Varget. I haven't tried it.

Stan, my Oehler showed these results:

23 grains = 2550 ft/secs

23.3 = 2600, 23.6 = 2640, 24.1 = 2717

23.6 works very well for a friend with a Krieger 18"

Thats outstanding! Does it shoot real good at all distances? Sometimes with the heavier bullets you have to do load development at 2-400yards so I was curious what your 100 and 200 looked like. Again, thats great shooting.

I load 23.0+/- Dillon 650 accuracy in my jr teams ammo. They are using the ammo for high power matches, not benchrest, so keep that in mind. Seems to work great for them. I have shot some of it out of my spacegun and I couldnt tell ya if it was Varget, N540 or Tac, but then, with a sling and irons on a 1moa X ring target, it doesnt matter if we shoot .2s or .3s anyhow. :)

YMMV, but TAC seems to work pretty darn well...and, the key, its available!

The next day we went out and re shot this 23.0 grain load at 300 yards. Different shooter

Well, the loads I have tried so far with TAC behind 77gr SMKs really haven't been too impressive out of my AR. My rifle is a SPRish clone I built with a 20" stainless Lothar Walther 1/8 barrel. Original 3-shot groups with a round robin load development up to 24.4gr (in .3gr increments) were very promising, with several sub MOA groups. However, 5-shot groups with those loads were no better than 1.25-1.5" at 100 yards.

Jim,

What is your COL for the 77 gr SMK w/c and do you crimp? Based on some Silver State 5.56 I have these need to be loaded a little shorter - does that make any difference VS the standard bullet loaded out to max magazine length?

Re: .223 AR load for 77gr SMK's and TAC..anyone??

I seem to get great accuracy with these 2 powders with 77gr. SMK's. (18" WOA bbl)
Almost identical to each other (groups)

23.8gr. TAC

24.5gr. VV N-140

The VV N-140 works very well if not better with the 69gr. SMK's also.
