Hi everyone at SH,

First I will apologize because I am sure this has been covered in depth time and time again. I searched but came up empty.

I am not new to guns and hunting (mainly shotguns) but very new at sniping. I have a 10/22 that I have tons of fun plinking and modding. It wears a Tapco stock with red dot, laser, and light. I recently purchased a Savage 93R17 for practice doing some relatively long range shooting. It is about $.25/rd.

I am by no means an experienced shooter! Prone, with no bipod or bags I shoot 1.25-1.5" groups at 100yds with the .17hmr.

In regards to the .223/5.56; I was thinking of shooting either army surplus or cheap russian ammo. Paying more than $1/rd is out of the question for me. I dont have the tooling to load either...

Should I even bother purchasing a Rem 700 or AR to shoot super cheap ammo? I want to have something to shoot 200-500yds.

With the Rem 700, can it shoot 5.56 without an upgrade Wylde type bolt/action?

I want something that I can grow into. Budget is $1-1.3K with optics. But again, is it even worth buying to shoot junk ammo with? I know savage make some value .223's and that is an option for as well. I like the Rem 700 for aftermarket stuff for down the road mods.

I really appreciate the advice! I have learned a great deal from you guys here and am totally impressed by the skills and knowledge here!

Re: .223 for boob

First you are a boob. This is typical for just about every first post, instead of doing some research on your own you come on here asking a dumb question. Second you placed this in the optics section. Third are you LE or Military "New to Sniping"?
You said you have learned allot on here, well you don't show it.
Do some research on your own, use google or something.

Re: .223 for boob

Hi, I have an AR and like to shoot it. I purchase Winchester white box or PMC bronze for cheap plinking ammo. It is $0.40/shot about, and that is the cheapest I will go. For a $800 + rifle, you need to shoot decent quality stuff. Wolf with not be good for your rifle. Sometimes you can also get federal or remington 55gr bulk packs for about $.40/round, that seems to be just about the cheapest I can find. (that comes out to $8 for 20).

Also, shooting at targets over 50 yards is not "sniping".

Hope that helps.

Re: .223 for boob

Wow bad first post on my behalf!

I was in a rush and did not realize this was going into the optics section... sorry for that, mods please move or delete if deemed necessary!

Yes I have learned a from searching. However being that every one here is firearm crazy, I assumed they enjoy talking about firearms so sharing info is something they like to do even if it has been covered before! If not, please disregard this thread.

Thanks,

Re: .223 for boob

Well it depends on your definition of 'Go-Cart'. Most consider a kart as something with a live rear axle and no suspension. Given that definition, if there was any real innovation in NASCAR it could be possible with the right budget.

Ok fellas, you win. Close the thread. Sorry for attempting to stimulate friendly conversation involving similar interests.

Re: .223 for boob

If you want to shoot cheap bullets get a Sks or some other cheap rifle. A new AR or REM700 has more accuracy potential than cheap azzed bullets can deliver. 1/4 min gun 1 moa ammo. Why bother. I love my Savage .17hmr it's ideal for messing around and fairly cheap so are the .22's "most guys" on here are probably spending $1,500 plus on optics alone. They Shoot Serious competition or have some megabuck rifles. Their Scope rings and bases probably cost as much as my .17 savage they are looking for some serious mind stimulation Or intelletual firearm discussion. Hard Core aren't they. BTW them videos lmao... Don't feel bad I'm new to sniping too. Matter of fact I'm not even going to try. I just want to see bug holes in my paper target.

Re: .223 for boob

I'm in a very similar circumstance with you, just maybe a little further down the road. I've done some 200 yard CMP shooting with iron sights, but am really getting into scoped rifles as my eyesight sucks. As a quick note, not knowing you're shooting skills, if you want to learn the real fundamentals of marksmanship, get some great practice and have a lot of fun I'd STRONGLY recommend finding a CMP program in your area and getting involved. They can really help you develop into a skilled rifleman.

Being that my rifle shooting has CMP roots, I've a lot of respect for the AR15 rifle, especially set up in match guise. Rock River (RRA) crafts some excellent rifles that are fairly priced and have well proven accuracy. I have a flattop national match RRA that is typical of what they produce, very accurate and reliable. It has all the basics needed to be a fine rifle for your use other than the optics, which can easily be added. Using this rifle would permit you to participate in CMP shoots if so desire, OR they offer a very similar rifle with a free float fore end and no metallic sights as the Predator Pursuit.

Either of those rifles would offer a fine weapon to do what you seek. Both have a NM trigger, 1/8 twist 20" barrel which will stabilize the heavier bullets needed to shoot well at 500 yards, free floated barrels/ fore ends for accuracy, a Wylde chamber that allows the use of either .223 or 5.56 ammo and both are flattops to allow for easy optics install. If you think you might want to try CMP shooting get the NM, if not get the PP.

For good target optics I suggest getting a 10x Super Sniper to stay within your budget. Use a cantilever one piece mount available from numerous sources to mount it and you should be pretty well set.

For cheap ammo, look around and check recommendations, but there are a number of options that should give you good shooting ammo that will stay within budget.

The above gear ought to keep you pretty much in budget with some careful shopping and will give you a very capable package to learn and grow with for years to come.

Re: .223 for boob

Awh man, when I opened this post I thought I was gonna see some boobs.

Anyway, cheap ammo? Good for making noise. But why not pay a bit more, get a better quality product and work on proper form and shot placement? Consistancy rules and cheap ammo generally is not very consistant. IMHO buy quality and you also end up with brass that you might actually want to keep for reloading someday. That's my opinion, and keep in mind it's worth what you paid for it.
