Anyone running any .223 loads with H380 and 55gr FMJ's? I can't find too much info with this combo. Lee's load data shows a 28.5 gr. charge for a 53 gr. jacketed round as the min. and max. So, if anyone else has something different, I'd like to hear.

Thanks

Re: .223 & H380 loads...

H380 is far too slow for use with 55's. On a burn rate chart you'll see it's slower than Reloader15. Your not seeing any loads out there because nobody uses them together. try some H335 or W748 for 55 grainers.
I've never heard of anybody use H380 in .223 at all, so i'm guessing it just doesn't work well with the case size. Lots of guys use it in .308 or .260.

Re: .223 & H380 loads...

I use Varget with 55's and have under 3/8 in groups at 100 consistantly. The powder charge is low (22.5gr) however ill take accuracy over velocity. I have tried H322 in the past with good results as well.

It was popular with some in the early eighties along with 4198 and 3031..
H-380 does not have a lot of latitude though.

H-380 with 55 gr. FMJ. Start 25.5 Max 28.0

Re: .223 & H380 loads...

Thanks guys. I have plenty of Varget laying around but that goes to my .308's. I was asking because I have about a 1/2 lb of H380 laying around. I tried a load of 27gr under a 55 gr. round. It worked pretty well. I am not looking for real accuracy per se, just woods rounds for playing in my SBR.

Re: .223 & H380 loads...

I use 22.5 grains of H380, cci 400, 55 grain hornady soft point and LC .223 case. For plinking ammo it works fine, i chrono them today at 2100fps, a bit slow compare to the average .223 speed. If you are looking to shoot at 100 yards of less then this will work fine.
