I need help in deciding between the two. This rifle will be used for target shooting (out to 500 yards) most of the time and used for varmint hunting. The two I have it narrowed down to are a Rem 700 sps tactical with a 20inch barrel with 1in9 twist sitting on a manners t4 stock I already have, the other a DPMS 16inch bull barrel with a 1in9 twist. With 1in9 twist I was hoping to use a 75 grain bullet.

I'll probably catch hell for this but....go with the M700...tha AR's can not match accuracy.....with the same money spent....the AR is a good platform but odds are the Zombies aren't going to come and the M700 can go out further if you rebarrel it to 1-7 twist....looking at 1k yards with the correct bullets...the AR can as well but the true sport of shooting is better served with a bolt action IMO.

Go with the SPS...shootout the barrel and then rebarrel to a fast twist.

If those are your only choices, go with the 700. The AR you are considering is useless for your stated purposes.

For 223, out to 500 yards, with varmints, you can't go wrong with an AR with a good barrel. More and more varmint hunters are using ARs...and loving them. I'd recommend a 20" to 24" barrel, 1:8 twist, Wylde chamber. A 16" barrel is not what you want for varmint and predator hunting out to 500 yards. Rock River Predator would fit the bill very well: http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=271

A bolt action might be slightly more accurate...might. But an AR with a 5 or 20 round magazine is a lot of fun with the Varmints.

The short answer, you need both. Bolt for paper and AR for hunting

I have a 223 700 with a 20" 1/9 twist. It loves the 69's but you have to know the wind. One the other hand, I have an AR with a 20" 1/7.7 that loves the 77's. They are both a blast to shoot but I would go with a 1/7.7 to shoot the 77's if 500 is where you plan to spend a lot of time.

You can obviously do what you want to with an AR15 though that DPMS would be my last choice. You need something with a great barrel.
A bolt gun would allow you to accomplish your goal a little easier I think... and probably cheaper too. As others have said, if you want to shoot 75gr at long distance, you better get a 1/8 or 1/7 twist barrel.

    Re: 223 in AR15 or Rem700

I'd have to say that for varmint hunting an AR gives you the ability to spot hits and follow up quickly with a properly doped shot.
    I'd get a 1-8 twist 20" Wilson SR barrel for $200 or a Kreiger 1-7.7 twist 20" SR barrel for $425.
Both will do .5 MOA Accuracy wise, and I think that is more than good enough for real world shooting.
If 3" groups at 500 - 600 yards isn't going to make you smile than you know what to do.
For the .223 caliber the AR is the best platform IMO.
Save your boltgun for a different caliber.
    (22-250 in a 1-9 twist)

Thanks for all of the replies, I made my decsion and went with the Rem700 SPS tactical. My plan is to add my manners t4 stock and top it with a falcon menace 4-14 with seekins rings and rail. Later install a tactical bolt knob and seekins trigger guard w/ detachable mag. Think that will work??
