223 max accuracy ?

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

Assuming it's a bolt gun (since you're using the 80 gr.)?

I've seen guys shooting .223s with good accuracy, i.e., .25MOA or better. And, the BR crowd may want to chime in (they're probably in the .1s). Typically I've seen this with .223 bolt guns.
But, I also know plenty of guys buiding .223 gas guns for varmint/prairie dog hunting and achieving sub .5MOA or better results. I've seen more folks typically use the 69/77gr. although some use the 80 gr. and single load. When PDog shooting it's nice to have a quick follow up shot if you're shooting an AR anyway. There are plenty of folks that use cheap 55 gr. loads and are getting "good enough" accuracy for PDogs. The size of PDogs pretty much demand 1MOA or better.
My 3-gun AR has a 18", 1x8"; I use 77gr SMKs with Tac and I get .5-.75 MOA results. I'm not a great group shooter by any means.

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

I built an engine, it has 350 cubic inches. How many horsepower can I expect? LOL

What barrel, chamber, who chambered it, is it floated, what trigger, what sighting system, what are you capable of, yada yada.

Why would you build a semi auto then buy bullets that have to be single loaded?

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

Ok rookie here! i was told a80gr would run in my gun,it's a dpms 24" 1 in 8 twist, for now is factory trig but not for long have ordered a timney trigger it is floated and the scope is a sightmark 10x40x56mm! But i dont mean to sound like a dumba$$ but dont understand the who chambered it part !!

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

You will not be able to load the 80 grainers to magazine length if you do you will have to use an ultra low powder charge(just don't do it) the 77 grain is the best bullet if you want to load magazine length. The 75 grain amax and up can not be loaded at magazine length either(the tip is too long). Also what chamber is it? If it is .223 then you are screwed hope it is a wylde or 5.56 to accommodate the higher pressures.
Receiver wise if it ain't a billet upper you can expect a lot of slop between the bolt carrier, alignment with the bore, etc.. Although once in awhile you can get a descent forged upper. I get typically 1/2 moa at 200 yds with mine using the 77gr smk loaded magazine length.(Billet Upper, krieger barrel 1:7.7 twist, wylde chamber)

If you need any recipes for loads let me know or just go to 6mmbr.com they have recipes for ya make sure you look at the ar-15 loads

here is a link to ar-15 loads loads

As you will notice magazine length is 2.260 COAL and the 80 grns ones have a COAL length of 2.550 of which you will have to load one at a time.

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

Ok it is chambered in 5.56!looks like i will have some bullets for sale lol will prob send em back, you are talking about seirra matchking 77 gr right? The matches around me only range out to 500 yrds and i plan on going to a long range prission class this spring so i was wonting to get a gun together that will get me out past 500 accurately!

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

.223 is and has been used to win Fclass matches out to 1k.
More accurate than you are

What YOUR gun and load do is a bit different but there is nothing wrong with the .223 from an accuracy point of view. OTOH, there are cartridges which will be better everything else being equal but you won't be shooting that type of match with that gun so don't worry about it.

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

I can build a .223 rifle [before scope] for less than $100, I have done it, that shoots sub moa 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

I used a 16" twist $33 surplus Douglas 22 rimfire barrel from Numrich, an action off a $50 Turk Mauser from BIG5, and 4 cent blem 33 gr Vmax bullets at 3500 fps.

With that rifle at a 100 yard range in dead calm at dawn, I can shoot better that the best 223 in the world forced to shoot at the Issaquah range on a average day, at the mouth of Stevens Pass and opens at noon.

What does it all mean?
The wind gusts in the Seattle area keep the difference between 223s with SAAMI [or tighter] chambers down in the noise.

Re: 223 max accuracy ?

Sorry been gone on a hunting trip!!I never miss opening day of bow season in illinois! Thanks for the info guys! it's shooting about a 3" group with 68gr lc brass and hornady soft tips at 300 seemed to me the bullets were walking around cause of the spin, sent the 80grs back and getin them replaced with 77gr smks!!
