I know it's a 1:9 twist, generally good for up to 68/69 grains, anyone run the 77's with success? I'm talking specifically with the 5-R .223

Nosler 77’s shoot well in my tactical as well as 69smk and if you want to run distance try 75 berger vlds seen here. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...585#Post3060585

You should be good for a few more FPS with that barrel.

25.3 grains of varget in LC cases with the 69’s will get you going; OAL that worked in mine was 2.255ish

Yeah prefer the SMK's due to price, Bruno's only has the 77's and 80's, and midway is a little high on the 69's. So I was hoping I could use the 77 SMK's. Sounds like it may work.

It's also the 20" barreled version, so velocity will be a bit lower

FWIW,

Nosler 77 grain CC's are just a little shorter than the 77smk and always shot better in my tactical than sierra. BUT, I could never find a good node fast enough to outperform the 69 smk's at distance. I think my max velocity was somewhere in the mid to high 2600's with the 77's. The load above would give me 2840 with the 69's out of the 20" tactical. On a positive note, the Nosler CC have a very slight advantage in BC(per data in Bryan Litz's book "Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting") compared to sierra and have always been cheaper when buying in bulk.

I tried varget and imr8208 with both. 8208 always seemed very temperamental, I could load hotter with it without pressure signs on the brass but it never turned in groups that matched varget and the nodes were wider (charger weight) with varget as well.

I never could get 80smk or a-max (both 80 and 75) to work in mine. Groups would swell 10x the size as 69's and showed signs of instability.

I have had success with my 5R with the 77 smk out to 100 yards. I have not tried it beyond that yet or gone any further with load development. I run varget powder. I would like to see what others perfer for the .223 5R as well!

Hodgdon Benchmark and the 77SMK give very good accuracy in the 20" Remington SPS Tacticals. We are just above sea level here and have used this load out to 600yds on days as cool as 35deg F.

Forget the Load Manual recommended max and work up a load for your rifle with the bullet in the lands.
