I dont know where to put this I have done a search and I see that a 223 will get to 1k , but my question is will a 20" barrel get out there ??

we all know a 308 can but what about the 223 ??

thanks

Re: 223 to 1000yds

shot my 20" AR out to 940yds today.....with 69 SMKs took about 40 MOA

Taken from the 223ai vs 308 thread

My drops were 500y-9.75, 600y-13.5, 700y-17.25, 800y-21.75, 900y-26.?? (could not see impacts well but likely 26.50) 1000y-32.25 on the nose with a clean target.

The conditions;
961 ASL, 29.95 corrected pressure, 72degrees, about 50% humidity and switching winds from 6 o’clock to 4 o’clock at 5-7mph w/ gusts up to 12mph

So in my opinion it looks like a G7 bc of .242-.244 matches well, that would be around a g1 of .480

I am impressed with the jlk’s performance. I also shot 80 a-max with a known velocity of 2790 and the jlk used 2.25moa less elevation at 1k with less horizontal spread.

The rifle is a 700 with a 21" rock creek barrel 7 twist with a standard 223 match chamber (not AI) set up for long OAL's with 75&80grain amax and vld's.

Re: 223 to 1000yds

My setup

1:8 twist
Standard chamber for 80 AMAX
2775 fps
21" barrel

If you run that on JBM it keeps up with most 308's.

It's been out to 1200 yds.

Re: 223 to 1000yds

Thank's guy's I want to see if I can get my new sps tactical to 1000yd's.
I may be pushing it but we will see I am pretty keen to try it out .When I finally get it still waiting on permit to purchase .....

I know there are better choices out there to try and get to 1k but this what I have at the moment

I have some 69smk's and some 77smk's coming don't know if the 77gr will work some say they do some say they don't so I will try.

Re: 223 to 1000yds

The Army, Marine Corps, ect has been slinging the 80-90 grains to 1000 for quite a few year All out of the 20" AR/M16 platform. Its been a while but I believe the Soldiers crank their front sights down 4 revolutions and to shoot the open sight course.

The loads they are using are their AMU customs and not to say they are pushing the edger but the long range brass that they leave no one I know ever picks it up. A few years ago they were using LC brass with the military crimped primers versus the AMU Black Hills contract cases to keep the primers from blowing and all the cases I saw had well flattened primers.

Re: 223 to 1000yds

I lost the bout with the .223 SPS with heavies. Could not get the 75 AMAX to stabilize (but that depends on each gun and atmosphere). 77 SMK could get there but will make you crazy at times...

Re: 223 to 1000yds

I have a factory Rem tactical as well, in my experience the BTHP's will all stabilize with the exception of the 80 and 90 grain bullets. 69, 75 and 77 are all good to go.

The A-max were a no go. It will shoot 75's, stable enough to land nose first, but groups went from my usual 3/8"-5/8" to +4" with the amax.

You may have the best luck going long with Bergers 70 grain VLD as I can get a couple hundred feet per second more out of it than the 75-77 class bullets. It has the same BC as the 77smk...

One plus on the 70vld is loading to touch the lands is possible and it is still mag friendly in the factory mag box.

I shoot a 1:7 WOA upper Service Rifle across the course AND at 1000 yards. 20 inch barrel of course. I use 80 grn SMKs, and as per the quote, I come down 4 clicks on my front sight and use my 600 yard rear sight setting.

Playing with Bryan Litz "Point Mass Ballistic Solver, compairing my 80 grn 223 @ 1000 yards I get a 8.7" (10 MPH FV wind) drift, and with 175s in my Heavy Match M1A I get 8.0" (10 MPH FV Wind) drift using 80 SMKs. Thats pretty close, and I don't know about the rest of you but I can't hold .7 inches at 1000 yards with iron sights ( or glass for that matter).

In service rifle I really don't see the advantage of the 308 over the 223 at NRA 1000 Yard HP Matches. I do see a benifit of the 223 in the fatigue department because I'm getting old and lazy.

Re: 223 to 1000yds

+1 Kraig

My 1000 yard load for Service Rifle competition is 24.5 grains of RE-15 dropped into massaged Winchester brass, primed with Winchester primer, and topped off with an 80 grain Berger. Average muzzle velocity is about 2800fps at 70 degrees which assures the bullet will get to 1000 yards nose-on. Zeroing for a bullet path about 36 inches above point of aim at 100, for intersection of bullet path and line of sight at 1000, requires 4 revs down on the post, from its XC position, and the rear set for 600. My 1-7 Douglas with CLE chamber appears to get me lower ES and SD with bullets seated about ten thousandths off rather than Bergers recommendation for ten in. At any rate, scores averaging 186 are expected during 4mph prevailing winds, such as are the norm at Ft. Knox's Scott Mountain Range.
