I have a Savage TR that I train with out to 200yds. Just wondering if there is any advantage of bumping up to .223 for a trainer?

(I have a .308 & .260 that I shoot when being "serious" and drive the 2hrs to get to a range that I can stretch their legs on.)

Honestly, with the prices of match grade .223 where they are you aren't really saving any money by shooting .223 unless you reload of course but then that's a whole different set of issues finding the bullets and powder. I'd say stick with .22 unless you just want a .223.

I train with a .223 in addition to a .22

It is a great round and can stretch out to 400 yards pretty well with less recoil.

It seems to me that the issue is the shooting facility. The 308 and 260 get to 1,000.

I can get 200 to 400 yards near home and the 223 is good for practicing and reading wind at those ranges.

I gotta drive to get 400 to 1,000.

A LR .223 bolt gun is about as much fun as you can have with your pants on! I say buy one you won't regret it.

Just need to save up funds for a McMillan A3.

Upgrade both your 22 rifle and your scope. 200Y is almost no challenge with a quality 22 using good ammo.

Have you seen the 6 groups of 5 shots? That's what I'm talking about.

223's have their place but in my case if I shoot past 500Y I go for bigger cartridges and practice with them so come match day I'm tuned in to where they'll be hitting.
