So I tried a few midrange loads over TAC with this 68gr HPBT bullet in my 5.56 chambered AR and while a couple did fair at 100yds, the groups went to hell at 200 6"+.

First is this bullet too long for a 16" 1-9 twist barrel to stabilize? Hornady says its good for 7-10 twists.

Second, any body have any loads that shoot good and might give me an idea where to begin?

Thanks

25.0 H4895, 25.3 Varget, 25.5 RE15 the H4895 especially should shoot good in your gun. Use mag or Milspec primers though.

We used this bullet in three different rifles, two were 9 twist bolt guns and an 8 twist AR.

Pet load was 23.0gr of AA2230 over a Win primer. Was a bug-hole load in all three rifles.

Re: .224 Hrn 68gr HPBT Match loads

The Nosler 69 CC's shoot teeny tiny holes out of my SPS Tac using 22.6gn of IMR-4895 and CCI BR4 primers. with the regular cci SRP, groups opened up to 1 moa at 100.

It's not exactly the H 68's, but it's a place to start looking for your individual gun.

Thanks, some things to try. Didn't try varget only because I'm into my last pound and the shop was out and likely will be for a while. So I've been forced to branch out and try new things, options are good anyway. Thanks again.

try this link from white oak precison for reference:
http://www.whiteoakprecision.com/info-reloading.htm
i'm using 24.0-24.5 tac w/fed or rp br primers as a std load w/68horn-69 sierra and 75 horn bthp. while not a varget or rl15 load, both of which i've had good results from, just not optimal velocity. tac flows well in rcbs powder measure and allows me more time for shooting, less for loading and retains very good accuracy at the same time.

It pleases me to hear that 8208 is producing such good results. Do you have any idea about the velocity? I just picked up a pound of it to develop a load with the 70 vld due to it's claimed temperature insensitivity.

Re: .224 Hrn 68gr HPBT Match loads

with my load I think its running 3000 fps.I have no chrony yet but QL says that its running close to that.and with the dope QL gave its really close to what I really use for drop.the little buggers get their really fast at 300 yards.

hope you get the same with your rifel.it has shown me to be a really clean and temp stable powder for me.I can take that load of mine out anytime any day and it just shoots.

Re: .224 Hrn 68gr HPBT Match loads

Regarding the IMR 8208 XBR and 24.0 grains with a 69 Sierra MK, LC brass and Tula sm rifle mag primers...

My 18" melonited Rock barrel gave 2780 ft/secs with this load.

My Colt 6724 gave 2909 ft/secs

So I'd expect 2850 with a 20" barrel.

Thank you very much, that is exactly what I was looking for.
