I decided to jump on this bandwagon because I'm weak-willed.

I put together an upper (bought it complete from BCM), added a criterion 1-6.5 22" barrel, torqued it to the upper per instructions, and added the necessary bits (rifle-length gas tube, low profile gas block. Barrel came pre-dimpled for the set screws, which I red loctited in. MI forend, which is neither here nor there. 6.8 bolt in a Colt complete carrier group (other than the bolt).

I can't get it to function with 2 different types of ammo (75gr Fed and 88gr Hornady). The federal ejects most of the time, but won't pick up a new round. The hornady won't even eject. I tried it on a carbine and rifle lower group - both factory duty weapons at my work that have a history of functioning reliably.

I took everything apart, made sure the gas tube was in the right place (centered in the port on the gas block, all of which is directly over the gas port). Gas tube is straight as an arrow in the upper, no dragging. Barrel not showing and carbon from blow-by from the gas block. I watched the bolt cycle - it is just not going back all the way.

I've tried two different lubes (slip EWL and break free). I tried over-lubing and running it less wet. I've tried cleaning the barrel and chamber. Nothing but factory ammo.

Help me obi-wan. Where to I need to look now? PS - I'm full-time firearms instructor/armorer for a smallish police department (100 officers). I take apart AR's pretty much weekly, and have been to several Colt armorer schools over the years - I'm stumped.

I don't know what the gas port size should be on this thing, and frankly I've never measured or messed with port size because we always buy factory guns that tend to run like tops with factory ammo.

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

PS - this is the most accurate .22 caliber centerfire I've every shot with the 75 gr, but shoots like ass with the 88gr stuff. But it's a straight-pull bolt gun, which is not what I was looking for.

1) I'm surprised you are getting crappy results with a 1-6.5 twist with those 88g bullets.
2) have you experimented with your buffer/spring?

my buddy built a 6.5 grendel that ran like shit and had similar issues. he ended up drilling out the gas port on the barrel just a hair bigger. now it runs like a dream

maybe he can chime in @longrange_lauber

Does everything run smooth and easy when running it by hand? If so buffer and spring would be where i would look next. I have had good luck with the strike industries flat coil buffer springs in over gassed guns. what buffer system and weight are you using?

It should have a .093 port if a rifle gas and a .098 if a rifle +2" gas system.

There were some mistakes made at the reamer grinder. Many were ground where the freebore is an extra .050 long and that makes it tough to get decent accuracy with the 88eld, 90smk, 95smk. The FE 75tmj usually shoot the best out of those barrels with the jacked up freebore. If you handload and want to single feed the cartridges you can handload with the OAL around 2.318" and get better accuracy.

The buffers were on the colt carbine lower, H buffer with standard factory spring. On the rifle lower, it was standard buffer and spring (Armalite factory rifle). It works with neither, so I don't think that's the issue.

Time to start looking at port sizes. Thanks guys.

Not enough gas. Open it up and then get a quality adjustable block to tune it.

Not surprising it shot like shit with the Hornady, both of mine did too which hammers with everything else. I got some of the 88gr ELD bullets too and made the mistake of weighing them and seeing as much as a full grain variation in weight and the bearing surfaces as much as .007” in the 20 I measured. IMO the stuff is just trash which is unfortunate.

Try some of the Federal 90gr match, both of mine have shot great with it.

Well, ow it runs fine with the 75gr stuff. It still won’t cycle the 88 gr stuff. Weird. It ejects the case, but doesn’t pick up another with the Hornady. I only shot 10 shots each, so maybe things will loosen up a bit with use. Had things to do. If it continues to choke on the Hornady, I’ll open up the port a smidge more.

Just to let everyone know, it seems to be running like a champ since I opened up the gas port. Locks open the bolt on the last shot and everything.

Wish I could find federal 90gr match ammo somewhere. I'm not a reloader, so factory is it for me. The 88gr Hornady still suck. It made me feel better when I saw a youtube video of someone else shooting great with other loads, and the Hornady shooting like ass. Helps me think it's at least not me and my rifle.

I guess that I'm the exception here, since the Hornady 88g factory is running great in my rifle. I did have to go to a light weight spring and gas it more before it started cycling properly, but now it's a great shooting fun machine. The Federal 90g were easier to get cycling, but didn't shoot as consistently in my barrel.

To the OP, try some federal fusion 90g factory in yours. It seems to have more oomph than the Hornady, especially in cycling the action. It's available at Target Sports USA for a decent price:

My tracking number says the 90gr Fusion will be here Friday. I hate waiting. 3 whole days! I also have my first subsonic .308 coming in since I got my can our of ATF jail. I think if I sleep for 3 days straight the time will go faster.
