I am looking at getting a .22LR pistol and would love to hear some recommendations. It will probably be shot quite a bit, over a 1000 rounds a month, as I would like to use it as a trainer. I would like to keep it under $500 dollars if possible. What else....well I also don't like the 1911 style of pistol, it simply doesn't appeal to me, I much prefer the look of Sigs and Glocks. I am also a bigger guy so I don't have little hands so it will need to have some meat on it.

Well, if you're actually going to use it as a trainer, get the 22 that's closest to your standard handgun.

For Glock, get the ISSC Glock 22.

For Sig, get the Sig Mosquito or a .22 upper conversion.

But if you just want a good .22 pistol, check out my review of the new Ruger SR22:

New model, lots of good design traits, and a nice modern 22. With the large grip size, I thought it was a good grip, and I carry a 1911.

If you are shooting Glocks and want a trainer, look into the Tactical Solutions .22 conversion kit for Glocks.

With the amount of shooting that you are planning on, I would suggest a purchasing a well made high quality pistol (i.e. Buckmark, Ruger MK III, Beretta 87, etc.). Pistols like the sig mosquito, P22, M&P 22, that have aluminum slides are going to wear out quickly with the amount of shooing that you plan on doing.

+1 of if you have a Glock get the 22LR conversion for it. I have one on one of my 19's and its great way to get trigger time.

Re: .22LR Pistol Recommendations

I got an Advantage Arms kit for my Glock 19 back in January, and its the best gun-related purchase I've ever made.

Unbelievably fun to shoot, and after a 200rd break-in with CCI Mini-Mag, very reliable. Doesn't like an old Federal Bulk Pack I've got, is about 70% with CCI SV, but eats Rem Golden Bullets (what they recommend) like candy. I hope it ends up liking CCI Blazers...

I've found if I send a brush down the barrel and wipe the feed ramp with a cloth every 150 or so rounds, it stays reliable.

Re: .22LR Pistol Recommendations

For the money you are willing to spend you could find a pre owned Ruger or Buckmark with a Tac Sol upper. I bought a 22/45 last year with a Tac Sol Upper, Volquartsen trigger, slingshot conversion, and some Tac Sol rails for $500.

Re: .22LR Pistol Recommendations

Ruger MK II, III 's - super reliable / tough - a holy frickin nightmare to take down (but you get the hang of it)
*favorite suppressed*

Buckmark, good also - easier to maintain

Hands down my favorite 22 pistol is the High Standard Supermatic Match shoot one and you will be hooked.

Re: .22LR Pistol Recommendations

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am probably just going to go with the Glock conversion. This will let me train and use the same weapon. Of course I do like the Sig idea as well but that would be over my budget.
